Actress Nichelle Nichols, who portrayed Lt. Uhura on the original Star Trek series, recently took flight on NASA's SOFIA flying telescope on a science mission. A Star Trek-themed patch was commissioned for the flight and Mrs. Nichols is auctioning 10 autographed patches that were flown with her on the mission. Proceeds will go to her Starpower charities. You can read about the contest about at her Starpower site here. You have to register as a VIP ($6/month) to be eligible to enter the drawing. Nichols has been an official ambassador for NASA after her involvement there began in the 1960s. Her foundation, Women in Motion, while under contract from NASA, began recruiting women and people of color for NASA's astronaut program. Those efforts yielded 10 candidates which were all accepted by NASA in the 1978 recruitment year. This is Nichols' second flight on board a NASA flying observatory, the first taking place in 1977 on board the Kuiper Airborne Observatory, SOFIA's predecessor. |

Neat concept, but not too crazy about the starfield arrangement on the UFP part of the patch. I know there are a number of stars on the emblem, but perhaps they could have taken a few out while leaving in the main stars distinct. |
