I was wondering, what is the story behind the gold version of the STS-2 mission patch?

I have no specific knowledge, but sometimes manufacturers will produce insignia with obviously incorrect colors, possibly in error, possibly for another reason. They are called "Frankenstein" patches.

These STS-2 patches with the extra colour yellow in them could be 'prototype' patches. See the STS-2 page on spacepatches.nl.

Also the following eBay lots; 141708108875, 291519981998, 291539917185.

I simply think it is an error - the wrong color of thread in the wrong position.

Maybe if someone from AB Emblem who is reading this post could shed some light on this version of the STS-2 patch?

How many examples do you have Erik? Do you have any examples Jacques?

The patch on the spacepatches.nl page is the patch I have. I found it on eb\Bay years ago... I also think it is just an error patch with wrong colours.

Yes, it looks like the black thread has been replaced with yellow, except for the beak and the eye, which is yellow on all STS-2 patches.

So it also looks like there are just 13 examples of this patch so far.

Harald's makes 14.

Are these gold or yellow variants? I have a yellow one in my collection.

They are more a dark yellow in colour than gold Harald.

All times are CT (US)
