With the STS-9 and STS-41D patches including the payload specialists' names within the body, and not on a separate apron (tab), were there any plans to do the same for the STS-10 (which became the 51C) crew? Seems like there's space at the bottom of the patch for a name. Or were there plans for an apron all along, seeing how the payload specialists changed from Gary Payton on STS-10 to another MSE for 41E/STS-15 and then back to Payton on 51C? |

Who's Who does not list as a PS for either STS-10 or 41E/STS-15, although it does note in Payton's bio that he was the PS for STS-10.Similarly, it also notes in Sundberg's bio he was the PS for STS-15, although that may have been a different flight (payload) than STS-10 when he was selected. Who's Who also notes Casserino as a PS for STS-16, a DoD flight. Either the schedule was really in flux, or that's a mistake. I used to have a tracking map labeled Mission 41F/STS-16, and 41F was the Bobko-Williams Discovery flight that got bumped when 41D had their launch abort. |

I found a source that indicated Jeffrey Detroye was named PS on STS-41E. The only thing I could think of was that the payload for STS-10 and 51-C were the same, but different for 41E. |

The failure of the IUS on STS-6 and the aborted launch of 41-D had long lasting effects on payloads and crews for all the flights for 1983 to 1986. |
