Sarah Brightman's "Chasing Dreams, Shaping Futures" personal mission patch

Global recording artist Sarah Brightman, a UNESCO Artist for Peace Ambassador, will fly to the International Space Station in September 2015 as a member of the Soyuz TMA-18M crew. As a self-financed spaceflight participant, she will spend 10 days on the orbiting outpost, during which time she plans to be the first professional musician to sing from space.

On March 10 at a press conference in London, Brightman revealed her mission's motto — "Chasing Dreams, Shaping Futures" — and her personal mission patch.

Interesting patch with a lot going on. I like the stylized figure at the center, like one of those dramatic statues from the Soviet era. But in opposition to that is — the NATO emblem on top? Maybe not her intention, but the patch does seem to encapsulate all the world events of the past few decades Brightman (and we) lived through.

Soprano Sarah Brightman reveals mission patch, motto for space station flight

British soprano Sarah Brightman will be "chasing dreams" and "shaping futures" when she lifts off on a self-funded trip to the International Space Station in September, the recording artist said as she revealed her personal mission patch at a press conference in London on Tuesday (March 10).

...a circular emblem that displays her chosen motto, "Chasing Dreams, Shaping Futures."

"'Chasing Dreams,' I mean this has been a dream of mine so obvious that's there, and 'Shaping Futures' is obviously space is going to be everybody's future," the singer said. "'Shaping Futures' is really about children and their future and what it is going to be."

According to Brightman:
At the top is the star of Star City. When you arrive at Star City, you see this beautiful star, a statue of it.

The Star City star is different. The top ray is significantly longer than the other three, the right star is also longer. If this is meant to represent it, it fails to do so. Would be wise to change it — it indeed looks like the NATO symbol.

New Sarah's patch version? Note 'TMA-18/16M' on the patch bottom.

SarahBrightman.com release
Notes on the design of Sarah's mission patch

The design captures the classic historic spirit of space travel and exploration, while using a female figure as the central motif – highlighting the potential of women to succeed in the worlds of science and technology, traditionally the preserve of men.

The figure is drawn with a respectful nod towards the stylish, heroic aesthetic of 1960's soviet statuary, in particular the monuments to pioneer cosmonauts such as the first man in space Yuri Gagarin. Similarly, the four pointed star at the top of the design refers to the emblem for Russia's Star City and the ascending rocket is adapted from the beautiful "Conquerors Of Space" monument which is situated outside the All-Russia Exhibition Centre in VDNKh.

At the base of this, the flags of three nations lead the way into the ascent; Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Behind the female figure is the earth – the most recognizable landmass we see is the United Kingdom, the birthplace of Sarah Brightman. Positioned like a crown above the female figure is the image of the International Space Station itself.

Never has the term "Mission statement" been more appropriate. For Sarah, this mission – TMA 18M – embodies her own goals: CHASING DREAMS, SHAPING FUTURES. Sarah's endless pursuit of realizing her own ambitions is matched by her personal commitment to the advancement of education for young people around the world.

She works closely with several organizations that strive to achieve greater opportunities in the fields of Science, technology, engineering, mathematics and the arts, including UNESCO (as an Artist for Peace ambassador), Virgin Unite, (the non-profit foundation of the Virgin Group — as a scholarship benefactor), and Challenger Center (STEM education non-profit organization — as an advisory board member). Sarah is also a supporter of The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation, which significantly supports the arts, music in schools, The Architectural Heritage Fund and awards 30 performing arts scholarships annually.

Finally, at the centre of the design, behind the female figure is The Moon, which refers back to the Apollo 11 landing. This event had captivated Sarah as she watched it on TV as a child and was the driving inspiration behind her earliest desire to travel into space. The moon also became the predominant motif on the cover of her latest album project, Dreamchaser.

Still can not see anything related to Star City in that symbol... A really unfortunate choice.

I really don't think that NATO has a stranglehold on the compass rose symbol.

As far as I understand this NATO logo will not fly to the ISS. Does anybody know the real reasons of Sarah's problems?

If you're referring to the Russian media reports that Brightman was being replaced by her backup, then they were incorrect. Brightman is still flying, as confirmed by Roscosmos today.

According to my source in Russia which is pretty good within 1-2 weeks the decision about who will fly instead of Brightman will be taken. Maybe it will be only two crewmembers in Soyuz capsule. Let's wait and see.

This source also confirmed me the crew got their patches and stickers. They can become really rare...

It is official: Sarah Brightman won't be flying on Soyuz TMA-18M.

No word who, if anyone, will be taking her seat yet.

Postponement of Flight Plans
Sarah Brightman announced today that she is postponing her plans to launch aboard the upcoming Soyuz TMA-18M spaceflight mission. Ms. Brightman said that for personal family reasons her intentions have had to change and she is postponing her cosmonaut training and flight plans at this time. She would like to express her extreme gratitude to Roscosmos, Energia, GCTC (Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center), Star City, NASA and all the cosmonauts and astronauts, for their support during this exciting time in her life.
“Since 2012, Sarah has shared her story of a lifelong dream to fly to space. Her international fame as the world’s best-selling soprano has enabled her message to circle the globe, inspiring others to pursue their own dreams,” said Eric Anderson, Co-Founder and Chairman of Space Adventures, Ltd. “We’ve seen firsthand her dedication to every aspect of her spaceflight training and to date, has passed all of her training and medical tests. We applaud her determination and we’ll continue to support her as she pursues a future spaceflight opportunity.”
