Scott Carpenter's Aurora 7 50th anniversary patchThis design celebrates the upcoming 2012 50th anniversary of Scott Carpenter's Aurora 7 mission, which was launched on May 24, 1962. The astronauts did not have mission patches in those days so to distinguish their mission, they gave their spacecraft radio call signs and had art painted on their spacecraft similar to the aircraft "nose art" made popular during World War II.  The original Aurora 7 art was painted by Cece Bibby. The four stars represent that Carpenter was the fourth American launched into space. The two stars together above represent the fact that he flew the second orbital mission. The three orbits of the mission are represented as well as the fact that Aurora 7 landed downrange upon re-entry. Along with Carpenter's name are a silver Mercury 7 emblem and gold Astronaut Symbol. The patch is approximately 6 inches high and 3.5 inches wide with a hot-knife edge border. It is fully embroidered The predominate colors are Navy Blue background trimmed in gold as Commander Carpenter is a Naval Aviator. Personally commissioned by Scott Carpenter, artists Tim Gagnon, working Jorge Cartes, designed this patch as a one time collectible to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mercury-Atlas 7. The patch has been produced in a finite edition of 300 patches. Of these, 62 — in honor of the launch year of 1962 — were numbered and autographed by Carpenter. |

I received my patch today. It is an unsigned patch and it is #111/228. The patch really looks great and would be a great addition to anyones collection. Thanks for producing these patches and making them available to us. |

Seems like such a long time since the original idea was hatched until the first patches have finally ended up in the first owners' hands. I think it is a wonderful tribute to our hobby for Scott to commission this piece and I think it is also a wonderful tribute from our hobby to show Scott how much we all admire him to add his patch to our collections, practically sight unseen, as a reminder how the early Mercury astronauts really laid it all on the line. I'm sure that as more patches, both signed and unsigned, end up in the hands of collectors, the balance will blow out in a matter of days. It will be a wonderful item to hold on to and hand them down to generations to come. |

Signed patch number 17 has savely reached it's new home and I can say it's beautiful!A big thank you to Scott Carpenter and Steve for making it possible. For anyone who still doubts if he should buy this patch I can only say: highly recommended! |

I received my patches (#26 signed and #123 unsigned) here in the UK on the 28th July. Wonderful workmanship on these great patches which I am having framed to display with a signed 8x10 of Mr. Carpenter. |

I received 49 today ... and while the orignal posting that I saw on cS indicated that the patches were signed and numbered by Carpenter, mine was only signed. Is this how all of them were signed? Now I did get a letter of authenticity that did specifically mention number 49, but it was not on my patch. |

Scrolling through subject Scott Carpenter on eBay, I came across a seller (260858077268) in Malaysia selling replica Aurora 7 50th anniversary patch.Is this copyright violation? |

Yes it is online piracy at its best (or worst).But there's not much I can do to stop it. Bottom line, ANY patch made in Malaysia is a cheap low quality knock off of someones art. After viewing the item, it's really a poor reproduction. |

I wouldn't buy anything from any seller in Malaysia if I were you. There hasn't been one thing that came from there that was authentic. Just reproductions, fakes, etc. And smaller versions of the real ones to add to that too. |

Nothing is more annoying than someone in a foreign country trying to capitalize on something like this. Tim makes a superior product that was financed by the late Scott Carpenter with the exclusive selling channel being through Farthest Reaches. All of this was set up on purpose. To see someone in a foreign country trying to hone in on something like this is nothing short of disgusting. ONE authorized outlet picked by Scott. That was it (and kudos to Tim for keeping his composure every time they do this to him. There should be a law.) |

There IS a law; copyright. But all designs I prepare for Soyuz crews unfortunately suffer the same fate. The real shame is that a platform like eBay makes it close to impossible to really do something about it. |

Malaysia are party to three international copyright agreements: the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, and the World Intellectual Property Organization Copyright Treaty. If you have secured an international copyright on your design, then you should file a complaint with these organisations. Perhaps, by going after the perpetrators, you can put a stop to the practice of producing unauthorised copies of your work. |

I appreciate the information about fighting this piracy but I have neither the time nor the money to spend. In the past I have successfully stopped a seller from marketing pirated reproductions of my patches and then a different seller pops up and I must start again.The best thing I CAN do is to educate potential buyers. If you didn't purchase it from me or one of my authorized retailers, it's a fake. |

Tim, sorry you have to keep going through all of this with your designs. I agree that education is key and this site does just that, educate us eager space enthusiasts who jump into bad purchases; I'm guilty of that. Since I joined cS, I have been more selective in my purchases and ensuring that I fuel my interest with authentic items. |

I'm bumping up this thread because I have received a number of requests about this Aurora 7 50th patch.There are inferior pirated copies available on eBay but there is one place left to purchase the original Scott Carpenter approved design: Steve Hankow at Farthest Reaches. Contact him while they are still available. There are no plans to remake this patch. |
