Soyuz TMA-05M mission patchSoyuz TMA-05M, currently scheduled to launch on July 15, 2012, will deliver Roscosmos cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko, NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide to the International Space Station to join the Expedition 32 and Expedition 33 crews.  |

The patch in action.Yes, Malenchenko's name in latin, Soyuz in cyrilic, as approved by both the crew and GCTC. We did not have the cyrilic version of the font immediately available and proposed it like this, with the intention to change it later (expecting there would be more changes requested by the crew). Malenchenko approved the first version; we were very busy with TMA-04M and Expedition-31 and forgot all about it... |

Erik van der Hoorn sent me the artwork. The mission patch: The patch for the backup crew:  The Soyuz TMA-05M patch design depicts the spacecraft as it enters orbit, lit up by the rising sun. In design, colour and font, the patch is influenced by the Art Deco style.The vertical blue and black bands in the background refer to the similar design of the flag of the Russian Air Force. The three stars symbolize the three crew members. The design of the star is that of a monument on the grounds of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center just outside Moscow. The Soyuz TMA-05M patch was designed by Luc van den Abeelen. |

I like the patch better in person. Highly recommend it. I think they will be the hit at the launch with Suni event in July. |

The crew already approved it in February 2011; official approval from the Russian side (which means: both Roscosmos and the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center) was given in early February 2012. This is now usually 5 months before the launch.By the way, following the departure of Mr. Perminov, the head of manned spaceflight (Mr. Krasnov) is approving the patches for Roscosmos. |

Incidentally, the Soyuz TMA-07M patch (also some 5 months from launch) was officially approved today (while the crew already did so exactly a year ago). |
