The International Space Station Expedition 8 patch is the first that was commented on in this forum when it had just been released. My question is: does anyone remember when exactly we caught the first glimpse of the Expedition 1 insignia?

I only remember that there was some disappointment at the time because of its simplicity - we had all expected something spectacular like STS-71...

Anyone have any memories (or dated files) related to the release of this patch? Or any of the other early ISS Expedition patches? When and where did we see those for the first time? What was your reaction when you first saw them?

My first thought was how it looked somewhat like the old space station Freedom patch. Both a little humdrum. They could have used some McCall in the design in my opinion.

I remember that when I first saw the patch, I though "how dull". I still find it to be the most boring patch ever, in my humble opinion.

Am I misremembering or was the simplicity of the Expedition 1 patch indicative of an original plan not to have expedition patches?

I vaguely remember something about the increments using the same Expedition 1 design, just in different colors...

How many color combinations could there be after so many flights? I'm sure they would have gotten fairly ugly. Glad they decided against that. Talk about boring!

The ISS Expedition 2 patch in any case was a Russian initiative, designed and initially produced in small quantities by Dima Shcherbinin of Planeta Zemlja.

Originally, Luc van den Abeelen and Jaap Terweij of Spaceview were to mass produce the patch (this was the usual way of operations during the Mir program) but then apparently, NASA stepped in and asked AB Emblem to do the same.

And I can vouch for that. My Expedition 2 patch was purchased from our good friend Joe Fricano of Sky Force Space Patches, so it's an AB Emblem version.

Interesting note here on Expedition 7. I have two versions, both again from Joe/AB Emblem. One has two names and the other has 3. I'll have to check them tonight to see the names, but my notes show I have two versions anyway.

There were three official versions of Expedition 7, as explained in this thread.

All times are CT (US)
