2009 Astronaut Class "The Chumps" patch

The insignia for NASA's 20th group of astronaut trainees, otherwise known as "The Chumps," including:
  • Serena M. Aunon (NASA)
  • Jeanette J. Epps (NASA)
  • Jack D. Fischer (NASA)
  • Jeremy Hansen (CSA)
  • Michael S. Hopkins (NASA)
  • Norishige Kanai (JAXA)
  • Kjell N. Lindgren (NASA)
  • Takuya Onishi (JAXA)
  • Kathleen (Kate) Rubins (NASA)
  • David Saint-Jacques (CSA)
  • Scott D. Tingle (NASA)
  • Mark T. Vande Hei (NASA)
  • Gregory R. (Reid) Wiseman (NASA)
  • Kimiya Yui (JAXA)
Editor's note: Look closely at the Earth in the patch and you may see a cloud that is decidedly a banana-shape. From our Oct. 2009 article and interview with Chump Mark Vande Hei:
...Vande Hei said that the Chumps posed for a similar fun [crew photo].

"We posed with bananas," he described.

But if they are the Chumps and not the chimps, how does that reflect the 2009 class?

"Our mascot is Chump the Chimp," explained Vande Hei.

Beautiful patch! Nice composition. I wish Jorge and I had done it.

I like how there is an Orion capsule going down towards Earth from Mars.

It could be an Orion, but then again a Dragon or CST-100.

I'll be happy if the capsule translates into anything man rated in the not too distant future.

Group 20 astronaut Jack Fischer flew the T-38 jet that brought Steve Bowen to Kennedy Space Center today for Discovery's launch later this week.

Fischer wore his class patch on his flight suit. (Photo was taken from a distance.)

DANG! A guy I served with was at Ellington JRB a month ago and offered to swap me for one of these but he had no idea what it was. Probably was a real one and neither of us had a clue...
