I noticed that the Apollo 16 patch artist apparently hid her initials, "bam", in the patch artwork. I'm curious, was it common practice for the mission patch artists to sign their work like this?

If yes, then it's going to be fun hunting for hidden signatures!

The Apollo 16 patch was designed by NASA artist Barbara Matelski (presumably her middle initial was 'A'). She was also responsible for the Skylab 3 emblem.

For another example of the artist inserting initials into the insignia, see this earlier discussion of the Apollo 15 crew patch.

Hmmm. No activity on this for a good long while. Let's just say that I don't know of any artist initials prior to Apollo 13...

In our embroidered Soyuz TMA-14 patch, we did hide the initials of designer Anna Chibiskova (in the Earth).

In the Mir Expedition 24 patch (the one with rocket and wrench), Luc hid his entire given name upside down in the clouds.

In the Mir Expedition 20 patch, the initials MT are hidden in the clouds for Jaap Terweij's daughter Misha, who was fatally shot in Amsterdam in 1995.

And in one recent Soyuz patch, I did hide the initials of someone close to me...
