An out of control eBay auction tonight made me wonder about this question:

When I read descriptions of the origin of the STS-70 "Woody" patch I see that a limited number were produced for the crew. Spacepatches.nl says, "When the crew saw this alternate patch, they loved it. The crew received one hundred of these patches and Don Thomas ordered an additional hundred for himself."

If you read various descriptions of the STS-70 Woody patch, very few make mention of the version that was issued with the calling card.

Is there more than one version? The 200 patches issued for the crew and Don Thomas and then a number issued with the calling card or are they one and the same batch? My calling card version (in original packaging) is marked with a hand-written number "713". I am not sure what that means, 713 of 1000?

As far as I can tell, all of the embroidery all of the scans of the STS-70 Woody patches are identical.

The auction: I am not sure what happened with eBay auction 130912442273 tonight, but an STS-70 Woody patch went for an exorbitant amount, though I suspect at least one of the bidders is bogus (0 feedback) though I am not sure what is compelling the other bidders to continues to bid. In the end it sold at $455. With a third bidder bidding at $375!

The same thing occurred with a "Rastro" patch between the same bidders 30 minutes later (130912465559) at $480.

If I remember right both the Woody (and Rastro 2) patches were from Eagle One Aerospace. The only way to get the Woody patch was to buy it with the phone card. I still have it unused and will have to see if it was numbered.

The Woody patch (designed by JSC employees Andrew Parris and Paula Vargas) could also be ordered seperately.

I understand the high price for the Rastro patch (designed by Vargas) - it is indeed very hard to find these days.

In the auction description STS-70 was called the 100th manned mission. Think that STS-71 ended up flying before this one making 71 the 100th mission.

Was in the press corps for that flight and during RSS Rollback the afternoon/evening before launch a couple of astronauts (crew members?) came driving by on the pad perimeter road in a nice little convertible. They had a small "Woody the Woodpecker" doll hanging gallows-style off the inside rearview mirror.

All times are CT (US)
