collectSPACE First Look Winco International presents an official NASA edition Celebrating Apollo XVII and the Golden Age of SpaceIn commemoration of Apollo 17's final footprints on the moon and the historic achievements of America's Golden Age of Space, Winco International is proud to present "Celebrating Apollo XVII and the Golden Age of Space," a new, limited edition framed set. Commissioned by Apollo 17 commander Capt. Eugene Cernan and authorized by NASA, the "Celebrating Apollo XVII and the Golden Age of Space" set pays tribute to the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs, and dedicates each mission and lunar footprint to those who made them possible. The timeline and included emblems represent this historic era and highlight Mercury's first journey to space and orbit around the Earth, Gemini's first spacewalks and rendezvous, and Apollo's first lunar orbit. It also remembers Neil Armstrong as the first man on the moon, all the other lunar explorers and the splashdown of Apollo 17. The edition-exclusive medallion and "First Footprints" emblem are minted with metal flown to the moon on Apollo missions. The edition-exclusive collage is hand-signed by Apollo 17 astronaut Gene Cernan, who left man's final footprints on the moon. The lithograph was created by NASA award-winning artist, Blake Dumesnil. Measuring 19.75 by 23.75 inches (50.17 by 60.32 centimeters) framed, "Celebrating Apollo XVII and the Golden Age of Space" is limited to 1,972 pieces. A numbered Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is included with each frame.
Editor's note: As they have with previous releases, Winco will be extending a special price for "Celebrating Apollo XVII and the Golden Age of Space" exclusively for collectSPACE. This frame set will retail for $270 to $300; for our readers and members, this edition will be available for $195 (plus shipping). Instructions for ordering at this special rate will be shared here soon. An optional package deal with Winco's "Legacy of Apollo" boxed pin set will also be announced, including a free gift. |

This is nice, can't wait. But this kind of kills the value of the one being sold at the ASF auction. |

The frame set offered by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is an Artist's Proof (no. 62 out of 200) from Gene Cernan's personal collection. |

Looks like a gorgeous presentation. One small thing particularly interests me, though: Apparently Novaspace has licensed their GT-4 patch design for use by other companies in other mediums. In addition to the pin in this display, I've also seen it depicted in a Project Gemini poster. This is a welcome development... I sure prefer that handsome, Jim McDivitt-approved design to the universally loathed "Spacewalking Merit Badge." |

The insignia dates back to the mission itself. It even flew on board Gemini 4 on the Fliteline medallions. But I am told that Winco requested and received permission to use the art from Jim McDivitt through Novaspace Galleries. |

Robert, thanks for the clarification. I was aware that the "American Eagle" atop the Gemini spacecraft depiction goes way back (I'd seen the Fliteline medallion as well as a couple of older patches using it)... I just assumed that this particular iteration with the blue background and silver border was proprietary to Novaspace. |

It would have been better to have shown either Gemini 6 or 7 for the first rendezvous mission or Gemini 8 for the first docking mission instead of showing Gemini 9. Yes, Cernan flew on Gemini 9, but this presentation is not meant to be a tribute to Cernan's missions since Apollo 10 is not shown. |

The only other thing I would change in addition to Cernan's Gemini mission would be the B&W pictures in the timeline. Every other picture is B&W until you get to A17 which is all color. It kind of throws of the balance a little. Still a very nice looking presentation. |

The pin in the set is made in part from metal flown to the moon on an Apollo mission. |

Careful with these offerings, some of the time they are really selling an item they don't have, in anticipation of getting one by the end of the auction. Been there, bought that, don’t want the tee shirt. |

Winco released to its retailers the same images it provided to collectSPACE for our announcement. As mentioned above, the retail price of this set is in line with the eBay offer. collectSPACE will be the only source for the discounted rate. |

Robert, do you know if the 200 of the Artist Proof version are a subset of the 1972 mintage or addition to? Thanks. |

The 200 Artist Proof editions are in addition to the 1,972 standard editions of the frame. The only difference between the artist's proof and standard editions is an "Artist's Proof" notation on the frame's serialized plate along with Capt. Cernan's signature in gold ink rather than silver ink as seen on the standard editions. |

As of today (April 10), Winco reports that more than 10 orders have been received and processed, and so the low edition number frames have now all been assigned. On behalf of Winco, thank you to those who ordered! If you haven't ordered yet, I would still encourage you to consider the frame or package offer. I received a frame set from Winco and it is even more impressive in-person than it is in photos. It is easily my second favorite frame set of theirs (after the "Celebrating the Space Shuttle Program" frame with all 135 shuttle missions). On edit: I just spoke with Winco, and they have reserved a few low edition number frames below 200 (but above 100) that will be issued to those who order through collectSPACE (others are now getting edition numbers close to 400). |

My order with frame #95 (I made it as one of the first 10 orders) and the pin set was shipped last week on 5/14. Shipped as two separate packages as well. Maribel sent me an e-mail after it had shipped. Arrived on Friday 5/17 via UPS 3-Day (which I had requested and paid extra for). |

I ordered on the 1st day (sn 092) and received mine about 2 weeks ago. By the way, I think this is the best of the Winco Frame Sets. I really like this one. |

This looks absolutely fantastic and is a great offer for collectSPACE readers (no I am not working for Robert ).I purchased the shuttle program pin set from Winco and find there work to be outstanding and this would be a fantastic addition. Before I contact Winco themselves has anyone from the UK ordered this and how much is the P&P say for the full package. Thanks in advance. |

Yes, I think that is a bit much also. Guess he is basing that off the one that was sold in the ASF auction a while back. Plus he always puts a high price on all his items (at least any I would be interested in). |

I got a response from Winco regarding shipping to Switzerland (I guess to the UK won't be much different). I've asked for a quote from Fedex because Winco offers UPS ($452 / 5 days!) or the two options ($87-$108 roughly) from the USPS, with the possibility that USPS won't accept the box due to its size. I recall members ordering the Shuttle Pins Set frame through the USPS, how did that turn out? My main concern is the handling from California to Switzerland. Any info appreciated. |

I live in the UK and bought the shuttle pin sets but cannot for the life of me remember the Import Duty costs but wish I could as I really want to add this to my collection, sure they were quite expensive though.I am planning on going to Autographica in September. Does anyone know if the ASF will be there and if they will have this available to buy? |

This is not an Astronaut Scholarship Foundation product, so I'm not sure why there would be an expectation for them to have it. |

Robert I wasn't expecting the ASF to have this but I have seen it available elswhere and didn't think It would harm to just ask anyway. We in the Uk always get a bum deal when buying from across the pond ie- Import Duty which is so rediculously high so any cheaper options are always welcome as sometimes you can pay more in Import Duty than the item is worth which is a joke.

Well as Gene Cernan will be at Autographica, and he commissioned this set, I think there's a chance that someone could have some for sale? |

Switzerland is no better, especially if packages are processed through the Swiss Post Office (for some obscure reason import duties are cheaper via Fedex...but then shipping costs are of astronomical proportion). The Customs Administration has managed to create all sorts of different taxes and duties on top of the sales tax (8%). My question was more oriented towards the proper (or not) handling of the USPS until it reaches the country of destination. |
