Space station-bound SpaceX Dragon gets mission patch

The first of NASA's contracted cargo resupply flights to the International Space Station now has its own mission patch, courtesy of the company launching the spacecraft.

Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, on Thursday (Oct. 4) revealed its insignia for the launch of its second Dragon capsule to the space station. The gumdrop-shape cargo craft is scheduled to liftoff atop SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket on Sunday (Oct. 7) at 8:35 p.m. EDT (0035 GMT Oct. 8) from Complex 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

A bit less spectacular than I expected... shame about the outdated type of solar panels depicted.

I'm looking for anyone who either has this patch as an original issue, or part of the set issued directly from SpaceX. Is it a fully embroidered patch consistent with all the other patches issued from SpaceX?

I have a version which I pretty sure isn't Malaysia made, but has a partial twill background. Some of the details are also rougher than previous original issue patches, particularly the Dragon logo.

Any input (as well as availability of an fully embroidered version) would be greatly appreciated.

The patch from the set is fully embroidered. It also has the four leaf clover (I saw a reproduction on eBay without it). No shiny silver thread, though.

This SpaceX CRS-1 patch is also manufactured by AB Emblem with the following details on the embedded labels;
  • 201490 Made In USA 10/12/20 on an old style all white label.
Part of this production run has the red star missing from under the left hand solar panel.

A slightly different version is manufactured by SpaceX with all their other patches in China.

AB Emblem have just listed on their website the previously unavailable NASA patch for SpaceX's CRS-1 mission. It has the patch design number 198383 (the original design number for this SpX-1 patch).

The date code for this patch is now confirmed as;

  • 198383 A-B Emblem Made In China 04/23 01
