Winco International announcement

Celebrating the achievements, legacy, and completion of America's space shuttle program, Winco International is proud to offer these official commemoratives that were commissioned by NASA.

This looks like a beautiful set but I am curious about the statement "official commemorative commissioned by NASA."

Does someone know the background?

As they have done in the past, NASA commissioned Winco International to create these pieces for distribution as awards and tokens of gratitude for their employees and those who have supported the program.

In some cases, like the NASA Award medallion, the design was dictated by the space agency. For others, like the "Celebrate the Space Shuttle Program" frame set, Winco took lead.

In the case of the latter, the design of the large pin set was in work for the past eight months.

Mine has been received (Winco received my order; I haven't received the framed set!) - just what I wanted to know!

When I checked with Winco yesterday about the status of my 135 pin set I was told there had been a delay in production and they hoped to get more orders out shortly.

Has any member that ordered one of the 135 shuttle pin sets actually received their order yet?

Winco is about two to three weeks out before the "Celebrating the Space Shuttle Program" frame set starts shipping.

Part of the holdup has been the discovery that the packaging material originally intended for the frames was not sufficient. Winco is in the final steps of securing more robust shipping cartons for the frames.

In the meantime, Winco has enhanced its Certificate of Authenticity to now be a full color booklet with artwork by Blake Dumesnil.

I know Winco really appreciates everyone's patience waiting for their set to arrive.

I have seen the final product in person and it is a beautiful set - one that I think everyone will be glad to have in their collection and well-worth the wait. We have pulled out all the stops to make this a worthy salute to the iconic program it represents!

As Robert mentioned, Winco's first full-color Certificate of Authenticity booklet will accompany these sets as well and I aimed to create a design for it that coincides nicely with the beauty and spirit of the frame edition itself.

I look forward to hearing feedback from everyone when they get their frames in-hand!

"Next month" is here but the latest from Winco about the shuttle pin sets is... yes, you've guessed it... next month again.

I don't for one moment blame the ladies I am in touch with at Winco. It is I guess just one of those things that the company is working hard to sort out.

I am happy to wait for them to get their issues sorted. Good things come to those that wait.

The problems that have delayed the commemorative shuttle pin sets appear to be close to final resolution.

The latest is that they expect to start shipping in around 2 weeks; the final hold up concerned the numbered COAs that will accompany each set.

Latest from Winco regarding the shuttle pin sets.

"We believe all the frames that have been ordered will ship before the end on June."

Their mat cutter (1 of only 19 of its type in existence) had needed to be serviced and has delayed the production a little. What is more, they are hand producing these sets at a rate of just 4 a day hence the delays but there now appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.

Rick, this project is definitely approaching the end of the tunnel and I know for a fact that the first frames have begun shipping this week. If it's any consolation, I am also waiting for my frame like you are and it has definitely been with a great deal of anticipation. But as you said above, it will have been worth it!

There hasn't been a shortage of unexpected obstacles such as the mat cutter head needing servicing, but the fact that these are being hand-assembled speaks volumes about the quality and craftsmanship that's going into this set. Even the boxes and packaging have been custom made to ensure these ship safely which was definitely a concern given the size of the frames.

This is the largest and probably the most ambitious frame Winco has ever produced and has been in-work for over a year. Even though it's been a long wait for everyone (including the people involved in the project), it has been necessary to ensure that the frame turns out to be as close to perfection as possible.

Thanks for hanging in there! I can't wait to hear what you think of it when you receive yours!

I've counted 141 pins and 1 medallion on each frame. I can't even start to imagine how much time it must take to place them chronologically. Really looking forward to this.

At a production run of 3,500, that will take 3.5 years to complete — 4/day, 20/week, 1,000/year — I gave them a two-week vacation!

I hope I didn't get number 3,495...

My sets arrived today via UPS 3-Day, which I paid extra for to minimize the handling time from CA to MI. Have not even opened it yet, as I just arrived back home from being out of town all week.

Maribel at Winco e-mailed me tracking information on Tuesday when everything was shipped.

International customers, the USPS does not accept the shipping box (it's too large!), so watch out for the shipping costs (be seated): $367 via Fedex!.

I've also received an email from Winco. It's much cheaper to ship the framed sets to the UK - only $306.11!

I've had problems in the past with USPS packaging size restrictions when I tried to import a rare bass guitar I had purchased from a seller in the US a few years ago.

Plus of course, if you are in the UK, as I am you have to add UK HM Customs VAT / Import Duty / Post Office fees, which are calculated on the TOTAL cost of the import including shipping costs. So these will be calculated on a sum not much short of $1000.

In the past I've known FedEx to pay these duties up front then send a separate invoice to recover the cost from the consignee.

Anybody in the UK/Europe thinking of cancelling their order now we know how much its going to cost to get our hands on these long awaited items?

After thinking long and hard I've just emailed Winco and told them to go ahead and fulfill my order. Now going off to lie down in a darkened room while I try and calculate how many months its going to take me to pay off my overdraft! Can't blame this one on Nat West!

If you attempt to establish a shipping cost to the UK using the USPS website it will tell you they cannot ship it because it is too big.

But if you are able to go in to the US Post Office they will ship it. Mine is on its way at a cost of $92. ETA 5 days (this Friday), via USPS Express International Mail with tracking.

My number was an estimate — FedEx has to calculate the exact amount.

Same scenario over here.

And so do DHL or DPD, for example.

So basically someone bought it for you and ship it from a US post office, right?

Mine has been FedExed.

I was checking FedEx tracking this morning at about 9.00 am and saw that my package had been flown into Stanstead yesterday and was already at the local Chelmsford FedEx depot.

Two minutes later, knock at the door, FedEx delivery man with a very large rectangular cardboard box!

So just about three days door to door!

Will enjoy unpacking it this evening when I get home from work.

I've just unpacked my package from Winco; pleased to report no visible damage to the two framed sets which were packed and protected by expanded polystyrene.

I received numbered sets 91 out of 3500 / 5000. My final invoice and credit card slip were in an loose envelope in the package but no sign of any paperwork from FedEx
concerning customs duties / taxes.

The FedEx guy who delivered it just asked me to sign his hand-held electronic gizmo but I expect the real bad news is on the way!

Very nicely made and finished with the larger framed set already corded to hang straight on the wall. The COA's are in small pockets attached to the back of the frames.

Just a simple printed card on the smaller Pin/Stamp set although I recall reading on the collectSPACE forum that Robert said that Winco were producing these in the form of a special commemorative booklet with special artwork.

No sign of that in my package although I haven't yet removed the plastic protective sheeting to get a look at the COA attached to the back of the larger frame so it could be a small two or three page booklet not just a card.

They are lovely sets and I'm very well pleased. I've now just got to find a space on a wall in my house big enough to display them!

Hard to think that this time last year I was in Florida in anticipation of seeing the Launch of STS-135 on the very last shuttle mission of all. Can it be nearly a year already!

Peter, the full-color booklet COA that accompanies the larger SSP frame is indeed in the envelope attached to the back of the frame and not packaged separately.

The smaller frame with the stamps just has the traditional single page style COA.

Yes, most helpful and thank you for pointing that out.

I found it when I fully removed the protective packaging to the larger set to have a really good look at it and to take some photo's for Rick who is expecting his sets to be delivered on Monday.

Definitely one of my best purchases ever.

#92/3500 and 5000 just arrived. Just signed the "Fedex e-gizmo" as someone mentioned above. I guess the customs bill will come later!.

Just sooooo neat (and you can add all the "f"-word you want to it).

I'll take this opportunity to thanks Winco International for producing this beautiful piece and Robert for making this available to us. Many, many thanks!

Did I say it was sooooooooooooo neat?

Yes; I'm forgetting my manners.

I've emailed Winco directly to tell them how delighted I am with the Sets I've received but I must also thank Robert for all he did and Rick and the other collectSPACE forum members for giving the rest of us periodic reports on how production was progressing.

Took delivery of the large shuttle pin set today #95/3500. Beautiful presentation that I can highly recommend, particularly at the collectSPACE member discounted rate. (Thank you Robert).

I was particularly impressed with the finish and the attention to detail. And despite the best efforts of the UK's infamous "Parcelforce" the package arrived in great shape, even if it did take 3 days to get from the west coast of America to Heathrow airport... and then 7 days to travel the 250 miles north to Merseyside!

Congratulatrions to Winco, Robert and everybody associated with this fine item. If anybody reading this post is thinking of ordering one... don't hesitate. You will not regret it.

Got my letter/invoice from Fedex today- about $80 of taxes. And for some obscure reason, it's cheaper than if the package had gone through the Swiss postal system. Go figure!.

Total cost of both the large and small framed sets including shipping to the UK - $940.11 which equated to £603.79 at the quoted Exchange Rate of 0.6615.

This does not include the £18.05 Barclaycard charged me additionally in Non-Sterling Transfer Fees.

Hope this is of help.
