Something I've always wanted to do is have a presentation of sorts for my shuttle patches. The first thought I have was having a picture of the ISS with all the shuttle-ISS assembly missions around it. Then I thought about a picture of Hubble with the six flights and the Mir missions. The problem I had was, what about the other 75-85 missions?

Well, one day I found the orbiter flags and I realized this might be a great option. Columbia is the first one I've done, next will be Atlantis and Discovery which I've already laid out designs for. Finally, Endeavour as it is my personal favorite and I'm probably gonna do something special.

How it was made: Since the flags are thinner, they do bleed thru whats behind it. I first had to paint a piece of plywood white, followed by a white table cloth under the flag. Patches and pictures have 2 very small dabs of super glue to affix them to the flag. The plexiglass I got my from my brother-in-law is the most expensive item (around $65 each) and finally trim that I stained. Materials total ran me about $105 total.

The biggest downside of this project is this: SIZE. 4 feet by 6 feet takes up a lot of wall real estate. But since this project is done, I can finally finish making my "mancave" in the basement and get these guys up on the walls.

I'm showing this to help motivate others if this was something they were thinking about. Also, I would like to hear what guys thought about it.

Looks great! Did you try seeing how it would look with the 107 patch set inside the orbiter outline within the "O"?

I think this presentation looks fine as is since the rest of the patches have a certain order. Putting 107 in the "O" would draw the eye away from the natural progression of things as they are laid out here (such as the 107 patch being over the crew picture from that mission). Besides, this presentation celebrates the whole history of Columbia and it shouldn't necessarily be dominated by JUST its loss as I see it.

Wish I had the materials and the budget to do this. But, I might "borrow" elements of this idea for something similar.

Looks very, very nice. Although personally, I would opt for something less permanent than super glue as the after-market price of orbiter flags is fairly high. I bet masking tape would work great. You just need something weak and temporary to hold the patches in place, then what's they're in the frame, friction will hold them in place since the force wedging the patches between the glass and backing will be strong.

I've been able to frame photos, patches, and other items in the center of a frame without using any adhesive at all.

Also, including the memorial Columbia patch might be a good idea. It might look good inside the orbiter outline, though even just putting it next to the 107 patch would be good.

328KF, I set it there and it just didn't look good in my opinion.

Spaceguy5, The memorial patch might actually be a good idea. On the flags, I was following them for some time and even though they are listed for around $100 on ebay ($250 when I started looking), they aren't selling. I messaged a couple of the sellers telling them I knew how much they bought them for and offered them about $60 for each. I guess time and ebay listing fees got to one of the sellers and they sold them to me.

They're mass produced and I don't look at them as special in anyway, even though they are awesome looking

All times are CT (US)
