ISS Expedition 51 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 51 begins with the undocking of Soyuz MS-02 in February 2017. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-04.

Expedition 51 will be commanded by astronaut Peggy Whitson of NASA. Her crewmates include cosmonauts Oleg Novitskiy, Alexander Misurkin and Nikolai Tikhonov, astronaut Mark Vande Hei of NASA, and Thomas Pesquet of the European Space Agency.

Nice, but I am a little bit puzzled by how they run the names around the patch in relation to the orientation of the flags. Some names and the Russian and French flags are upside down, while the American flag is rotated 180 degrees to keep it upright.

We know already what is the official design for the ISS Expedition 51 logo?

If Russian flag is upside down on it NASA will have to modify the logo.

It all depends how you look at it... any Heraldry protocol doesn't apply to space patches I presume?

Since The Institute of Heraldry doesn't design them, I would say no.

A very stylish design, great use of colour. However, the names look quite messed up. I do not understand the choice of putting in names upside down, which I believe to be a first in a manned space patch. I also do not like the irregular kerning (spacing between characters) in order to fill the available space.

But quite unforgivable is the really messy positioning of some letters: both the 'W' in Whitson and 'H' in Misurkin's name are sitting too high. This is reproduced in the pin and I am afraid we will see it again in the embroidered patch. A shame, for this makes the difference between a good design and a perfect one, which was within reach, I feel.

Expedition 50 and 52 also suffer from some remarkable font problems. We used to have these problems a lot some 25 or so flights back, but gradually, things started to improve. Whatever progress was made with the fonts over the past few years, has somehow been lost with these latest designs...

I missed this back in April, but Expedition 51 commander Peggy Whitson wrote about the patch and its designer, Sean Collins, as part of her "The NASA Village" website.
Recently I stopped by to drop off an Expedition 51 koozie and hat to Sean Collins. He was the principal artist for the design of our Expedition 51 patch/logo which are on both.
Whitson also shared the official description for the Expedition 51 insignia:
From as early as the 11th century, coats of arms have been used as emblems representing groups as small as families to as large as countries. The Expedition 51 patch is designed as a modernized international coat of arms, blending the traditional shield shape with our modernized symbol of achievement, the International Space Station (ISS).

The background represents our home world and its inhabitants, and on the right, outer space. The bi-color ISS is the bridge between the two, symbolizing the benefits on Earth of space research, and at the same time our mission to explore deeper into space, on a path to further discovery and knowledge.

This ISS-51 patch has product design number 254901 Made In USA 07/1655 date code. They were manufactured on the same small sample machine again, like the ISS-52 patches were with the same date code 07/1655.

Update: The original crew ISS-51 patch has also been found with date codes 12/2015 and 9/16/20.

With the MS-03 launch now Nov. 18 (Baikonur time), will the crew have corrected ISS 51 patches on their training suits? We haven't seen yet the ISS 51 logo with Fischer and Yurchikhin instead of Misurkin's crew.

Will AB Emblem be able to deliver to NASA these patches before the launch early enough to send them to the crew at least to Baikonur? Many people have doubts...

As far as I understand it is Erik who sends ISS patches to Russia but for on board suits by Kentavr. My point is for training suits the crew put on for TsPK and Baikonur trainings before their launch. And for these suits the ISS patches come from NASA.

In any case I wrote already before with Russian flag upside down NASA would have redo the logo. It is the case...

Rest at ease. We are working with the astronaut office very closely to hammer out the final details of this patch. We can only produce the emblems for the training suits, astronauts flight allotments etc., after we receive final approval from the astronauts and NASA officials.

We are very close to having the final product completed. I think that it is very likely that we will be able to produce these in enough time for the astronauts to have them during training.

From what I have heard, the flags are no longer upside down and they also got rid of the 'kerning' problem.

That is correct. All flags are now the correct orientation And I believe we have corrected all spacing between the text. It is going to be a beautiful patch! Hoping to have approval for it shortly!

Yes, if the original ISS-52 crew become the ISS-54 crew, ISS-53 become the ISS-52 crew, ISS-54 become the ISS-55 crew and ISS-55 become the ISS-53 crew. So where does the crew change effecting ISS-51 fit in to this exchange? Is it ISS-56? Or is one of the above wrong?

Half of 52 (Yurchikhin/Fischer) is simply also half of the 51 crew, that is why 51 is affected. And yes, new patch and pin for Expedition 51 - same design, but with only five names on it and some redistribution of flags and stars.

Good to see the names are no longer upside down either, which seems to be a last minute redesign of the original redesign. Of course there is no up or down in space, and it might have worked with a circular patch, but it looked weird on a shield shaped logo, which has a very distinct orientation.

The new version of the ISS 51 patch was also taken by the MS-03 crew to the ISS to replace the previous version Kentavr put on their on board suits. With velcro backside I think.

I got this information from a friend who was with MS-03 crew in Baikonur. Let's find photos from the ISS now...

So we'll have a flown patch for a crew that doesn't exist? Has this happened before - aside from flying Lance Bass' nametag which was already on the spacesuit?

There may be (and probably are) other examples, but for one, STS-133 patches with Tim Kopra's name flew aboard Discovery.

First, an image of Thomas Pesquet's onboard Kentavr suit with the old patch. These were the suits and patches the crew were wearing when they entered ISS. The photo was taken last August at the Kentavr factory; the Soyuz MS-03 patch still had to be applied.

And next, an image of the new patch. As you can see, the border is a little wider than the first version - resulting in the patch being a little larger than the first one. (For Kevin: 269637 MADE IN USA 11/1620. But I do not know if the crew took up patches from the same production run, it might have been from a smaller "55" batch.)

Soyuz TMA-7/Expedition 12 crew had a Panchenko Expedition 12 patch on their Sokol suits with the name of Reiter (who, because of delays in the shuttle program, would be on Expedition 13). Also, the oval Planeta Zemlja produced Mir-24 patch with unflown crewmembers (Eyharts, Lawrence) was seen floating aboard that station.

A very crude Russian made version of the Expedition 51 (Revised Crew Names) patch has come to light. It is not a TsENKI patch. It has a larger text for the names in a mid blue instead of navy blue, (as seen above). That mid blue is also used for the left side of the ISS and the space on the right.

From Thomas Pesquet:
Sewing our Expedition patch onto our Sokol suits on Sunday [April 30]. Not our specialty, but Oleg and I got the job done!

We are getting the Sokol suits ready for our return to Earth soon, and having the right patches is very important.

The suits keep us safe if there is ever a sudden loss of pressure or fire inside our Soyuz capsule. We don't really sew the patches into our suits, that would make holes and sharp needles are to be avoided on the Space Station. Instead the patch and the suit have loops that we thread through with string and a blunt needle, tying a knot at the end.

The sales department at AB Emblem are/were selling the Expedition 51 (original six crew names) 254901 patches, instead of the revised version (five crew names) 269637 patches.

This looks to of taken place earlier this month. Some of these patches sold were pre-production 'samples' with a 'short date code' 12/15 (December 15th 2015), and first production run 12/2015 date code.

All times are CT (US)
