I just received a framed display of Lion Brothers patches that looks to have been made as a presentation piece because there's a label in the lower right corner that says 'Courtesy of Safeguard Industries, Inc.". The Apollo 12, 13, 15, 16 and 17 patches all have the hallmarks, and the Apollo 7 patch is the one with the purple border. However the Apollo 14 patch is the one that interests me.

It looks exactly like the Lion Brothers patch except that I don't see a hallmark and the background is black, not blue like the one show on Gene Dorr's and Chris Spain's websites.

So my question is... since all of the other patches are made by Lion Brothers, and since the details of this patch look very much, if not exactly like the samples shown on the websites, can this be an 'unknown' version of the Lion Brothers patch?

I have a similar Apollo 14 patch with no hallmark and blue/black background instead of the blue on crewpatches.com. It was part of a complete set with purple Apollo 7, the 9-color orange border Apollo 11, variant, and a non-hallmarked Apollo 12. All are cloth backed.

This set came with an 11x17 Lion Brothers "Apollo Manned Missions" foldout. The foldout has a typewritten note on the back of a "Registration card" attached. It says "This is one of the original complete collection of 'Apollo Manned Missions W.G.P.'"

It also reads, "Emblems are very important as identification or a mark in our existence."

Who was W.G.P.? Any info?

The hallmark on LB Apollo 14 patches is often badly executed and occasionally those half-dozen stitches are missing all together.

The background color is a dark blue that depending on the lighting can look almost black, for example if you look at a patcxh head-on that is mounted behind glass.

The images on my site are almost always scans, which light up the whole face of the patch in a very different way to photographs. The brightness is often boosted too in order to bring out the details of the thread and twill etc in designs.

That's not to say that the Apollo patches mentioned above aren't a distinct variant. I'm just pointing out that comparing visually to a scanned online image might be deceptive.

As side-by-side scan of one of these patches with a regular LB patch would help.
