Five friends and I plan to follow Discovery's journey from Kennedy Space Center to Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center next spring. Four of us will be following the orbiter between locations. The other two will be exclusive to each (one at Kennedy Space Center, one at Udvar-Hazy).

With that event rapidly approaching next spring, here is the patch we'll be wearing.

I really like it! Nice job, just wish I'd been able to get in on this, would have loved to have had my name on that, as many other people will think the same...

Shouldn't this be in the You might be a space geek if... thread?

In any case it's a nicely-designed patch.

That would be appropriate, too. Wasn't sure where it needed to go. And thank you!

Absolutely! Hoping to place an order sometime in January. Maybe sooner depending on interest. Anyone who wants one/some needs to let me know as soon as possible.

Just curious... how do you plan to "chase" the SCA/Discovery?

Not really "chasing" per se. Two of us will take off out of Titusville (private aircraft) shortly after the SCA departs the SLF and follow behind by a couple of hours. Two others will follow us to D.C. in a car.

We chose "Chase Team" because "Follow Team" didn't sound as cool.

Sounds like fun! Too bad the "flight team" won't be in a position to see the SCA land. I hope to be at NASM with lots of cameras to capture that.

Years back, I saw STS-29 launch at the Cape, then airlined out to Edwards to see the landing. Unfortunately they switched from the lakebed to the concrete runway due to winds, so the view was from quite a ways off. I never did have too much luck with shuttle landings...

We'll actually have one member of the team in position at Udvar-Hazy to document the arrival. We've planned this very carefully.

Sorry about the STS-29 landing! Those are sometimes more unpredictable than the actual launches. But I'll say this from personal experience - seeing a shuttle on the back of the SCA is a VERY impressive sight. I got a surprise visit from Discovery after the STS-128 flight.

Found out the night before the SCA's departure that her first refueling stop was Amarillo (two hours north of me). Got in the truck and drove up that morning. I was able to see the arrival and departure. Between the two, I was about 600 yards from the orbiter on the end of the runway. Very memorable day!

Hope you see you at Udvar-Hazy next spring!

I am positive that they will, and there should be no shortage of media covering the arrival, too.

collectSPACE will also have a team in place, both at departure and arrival (as well as possibly some additional special locations, to be announced in due course). And we'll be inviting all our readers and members who live along the flight path to contribute as well.

Nathan, a very nice patch. It should compliment well some other projects that are now in the early stages of planning.

Sounds great, Robert! Hope to see you again! By the way - I've seen both April 12 and April 16 as ferry dates. Any idea which one is correct?

April 12 was the first tentative date set (for obvious reasons) but that was targeted very early on. April 16 seems to be the latest (per Florida Today) but even that is subject to change. Just as with the past ferry flights, weather will play a role, too.

Yeah I remember April 12 being the original date. Just wasn't sure where the 16th was coming from. It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

Keep us posted Robert. I'm planning to be there with some of my space geek friends. Would love to meet up with you. Should be a once in a lifetime event.

The arrival at Dulles is going to be interesting, to say the least. I was there when Steve Fossett brought the Global Flyer in, and he made two passes to Runway 1R (the one closest to Udvar Hazy) with his drag chutes out for photos before landing.

I am sure there will be some air-to-air photography done from some version of chase plane with the museum in the background, so I expect that a few fly-by's will be done this time as well. There is great road access on the south side of the airport leading into the museum, so there will be plenty of different angles.

Dulles will have to remain in operation, but now has an additional parallel runway on the west side, so 1R might be able to be be closed for a time during the arrival. Hopefully the winds favor a north landing for better viewing of it from the museum, but those passes can be done from either direction.

I saw Enterprise in flight when it stopped through Dulles many years ago, and the SCA/Shuttle combo appears to move quite slowly through the air, so there will likely be thousands of photos taken...maybe we should have a contest for the most unusual or creative.

The place is going to be a zoo once it's on the ground and taxis up to the back door!

I'd be shocked if they didn't do some air-to-air shots with the Capitol, White House, Washington Monument, etc. Those will be very iconic photos if they decide to take them. Can't wait to see how it all pans out!

Steven Burgess. He's one of our videographers. He'll be on site at Udvar-Hazy when Discovery arrives.

While the date is subject to weather and other factors, NASM is saying 4/17/12 as the date right now for Discovery's arrival.

With Discovery's arrival date officially set and an event schedule released, we've placed this design on t-shirts for purchase in our shop if anyone is interested, along with designs for Enterprise, Endeavour and the 50 Years of America in Orbit patch.
