Is there any chance or chatter that maybe someone will design up a Neil Armstrong memorial patch? |

I seriously pondered doing so myself... for all of 5 seconds. The greatest honor I can think of for the man personally is not adding to the trinkets and stuff out there already, when the man probably hated all of it. |

Also keep in mind that his estate/Purdue University still holds control over the use of his name and likeness. |

Considering Armstrong's scorn for the commercialization of Apollo 11, I think the best way to memorialize him is to not have a memorial patch. Or at the very least, only design one to either be sold at-cost or with 100% of profits going to charity. |

The feeling of someone making profit from Mr. Armstrong´s death by producing and selling a patch has a bitter taste to me. If somebody decides to make a commemorative patch to honour one of our best men ever, he should give the money he earns on the patch to the “Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative” or to some scholarship fund. Then I would agree with that and sure will buy the patch! |

Perhaps someone could approach the Armstrong family about volunteering to create a commemorative patch, with all profits from production going to the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative or another organization? I wouldn't do it without their approval. However it is a very nice thought.One thing to keep in mind when designing any type of memorial for Neil Armstrong: Apollo 11 wasn't the only flight he took part in. He was also a test pilot, flew the X-1B and X-15, and flew on Gemini 8. Apollo 11 isn't the only thing that he would want to be remembered for. |

Of course, if you'd like to support the Neil Armstrong New Frontiers Initiative, then there is no reason to wait for a possible patch. I'd suggest making the donation now, even if it is only for the amount you'd pay for a patch... |

I think charitable donations tend to do better when there is an item, dinner or experience connected to the donation. I know I would be willing to pay a good price for such an item to cover costs and fund his charity. I would love to have a lasting memorial piece to remember the man that I so greatly admired, however it would have to be something approved by the family and Purdue. |

Absolutely. Let's not do this. If you sincerely want to donate to charity in Mr. Armstrong's name then follow his family's wishes. Trying to dream up some justification for a tacky patch is just fooling yourself, and in no way honoring the man.In my opinion, of course. |

Which says more about the people doing the donating than the logistics of fundraising. Those who have the money to spend on a patch or dinner, have the money to make an outright donation. They just don't want to... |

I'm sure thats true enough, but all I'm saying is that there is a reason the Girl Scouts offer cookies, schools have car washes, I.R.S. give deductions for giving, and the ASF offers "Experiences and Memorabilia" to further their causes. |
