Has anyone been collecting or keeping error patches they may have obtained? I do not mean pre-flight patches or known crew changes but where a patch is made faulty but then got released to the public? I just picked up a few and thought it was interesting in that they really should not be out in public you know? One that has me very interested is the Shuttle Approach and Landing Test patch. The one I have is purple instead of black. Was that ever made and produced in quantity? Or simply a mistake of the wrong thread when they started the run? I will be keeping them myself because it kind of seems like stamps and coins, they really should be not out in public, but I got one kind of thought and you can tell it is not after production damage. Anybody else with similar thoughts? |

The increased interest in collecting rare space patches, due to their availability via the internet, has seen many such 'oddities' surface in recent years. In this respect, it is important to distinguish between what are referred to as 'variants', which all carry the same distinct (e.g. colour) difference and were commercially available, and what may well be 'one-off' patches, which were made as experiments or simply unfinished in the manufacturing process and have somehow found their way into circulation. Judging by internet sales, both categories tend to attract more interest than the regular variety, but due to the unpredictable nature of 'one-offs', I suspect patch 'purists' would argue it is only the recognized 'variants', made in sizeable albeit smaller numbers, that are truly desirable. | |
