I received an email from the STS-135 crew Thursday evening that the patch had been completed and approved. They thanked me for the designs that Jorge and I submitted. I wanted to thank everyone who sent me art to forward to the final shuttle crew. I want you to know whether it was STS-133 or 135, I fulfilled all requests. I thought it would be great if everyone who designed a patch would post it to have a final shuttle flight patch exhibit. Below is the patch that Jorge and I submitted. This has been a remarkable program and I think history will be kind to all those who made it possible. I know I speak for Jorge when I say that we have been honored to play a (small) part. I hope that one day we'll be asked to design a patch for a mission beyond low Earth orbit and I hope all the other cS artists will too. |

I love how the shuttle has Phoenix wings. I would love to try to submit something one day, but I have no artistic skill whatsoever. It's a very nice patch. |

What a beautiful design, Tim! I dare say they drew a lot of inspiration from your submission with the meatball background and omega symbol! Here are the two designs we at Max-Q Entertainment submitted. Many thanks to you, Tim, for everything you did for us in helping us crank these designs out. We will certainly keep trying whenever NASA plans new flights on a new vehicle! |

What a talented group of people we have here on collectSPACE... it's a pity the designs featured amongst all of the previous mission designs can't be used in someway. They are a pleasure to see. Well done all. |

This was my first idea (and my favorite) for the last mission. I know the ship on the left isn't like the others (cue cheesy Sesame Street song here) but I believe Atlantis was named for a Oceanography vessel if not mistaken. |

I take off my hat looking at your ideas guys. Any of you would deserve to have obtained the final patch. Very nice works! |

Nice work Tim, but what is the symbolism?I'm assuming the stars on the right represent each orbiter, with the two gold star representing Challenger and Columbia and the blue star Enterprise, but what about the stars on the left? Why a different shape, two different colors and the blur effect? Do the four stars within the black "triangle" stand for the crew (four stars four crew members?), and why use two different shapes? Nathan do the stars represent anything in your design or are they just there for balance. Does the gold star on either side of the orbiter nose have a particular meaning? Bull: Your symbolism is quite clear. I link the use of unusual colors and the Roman numerals are unique. |

My guess is that's no blur effect; it shows 2 groups of 7 stars representing the two crews of Challenger and Columbia.

Harald is correct: Jorge and I wanted to honor the crews of Columbia and Challenger whose sacrifice were indentical in a unique way. quote: Do the four stars within the black "triangle" stand for the crew (four stars four crew members?), and why use two different shapes?
Yes they do - the two different shapes are because there are two Mission Specialists and two "Pilots". Again just trying to be unique. |

There are sixteen stars in each design - Two gold stars for each of the fallen orbiters and fourteen white stars for the fallen shuttle astronauts. The symbolism of each design (and a lot went into each one) is explained in detail here. |

Hehe it wasn't supposed to be obvious. Just a background meaning that makes for a fun visual design. |

Hey everyone! Thanks for your interest in our emblem! We're actually out right now, but if the interest grows enough, we'll certainly look at ordering another round of these (we started out with only 50). We have a list of names of everyone who wants one, so feel free to ask! Thanks again for your support! |

As a casual (at most) Star Trek fan, I didn't "get" the IDIC thing either... had to Google it. So, geek FAIL over here

Kevin - I never knew what it meant (or heard of it) either until someone on our team suggested it, so no worries! |
