What exactly does a "space shuttle door gunner" do?

You can look it up on Urban Dictionary - it's a military slang term for people who like to claim more experience (especially combat) than they actually have.

Since June 2010 and a trip to Johnson Space Center, I have been making a very serious effort to lose weight. It has been hard, but I've dropped 72 pounds and ten inches off my pant size.

I'm not on any kind of diet. Instead, I'm simply trying to make better decisions about what I eat. Also, I alternate working out with weights and running/walking six days a week.

That said, I'm entered in my fourth 5k on Sept. 24. It's a fundraiser for the Victory Junction Gang Camp, which provides any number of incredible activities for chronically ill children free of charge. Several friends have decided to enter the race as well, and we're calling ourselves the Space Shuttle Door Gunners.

I would like to have some T-shirts made up for my teammates, if I can come up with a decent logo. I know that I've seen a Space Shuttle Door Gunner patch around these parts, and that would be perfect if there's some sort of design laying around. If not, would anybody have any ideas?

I'm not in a position to pay anything... but there WOULD be a T-shirt in it for anybody who's able to help out!

Editor's note: Threads merged.

When I was active duty Army, I had several of my people in the company I ran with odd MOS's people didn't recognize and when asked, "Space Shuttle Door Gunner" was a common explanation for them. New kids out of AIT and some of the civilian contractors we worked with would often drop their jaws and say, "Really?" I would just walk away and try not to laugh until later.

I bet it was FAR more common among USAF special ops types. Gullible people could more easily be fooled by them, I'm sure.

I'd never seen this patch before, I might have to buy one for the heck of it as it's so funny! Reminds me of someone I once saw at NASA Houston walking around with a flight jacket with mission patches from the "Armageddon" movie. Someone asked him if was an astronaut, he pointed at the mission patch and said, "I was there, man," and walked along. Again, it was all I could do not to bust out laughing because only I got the joke...
