I'm looking for addition historical information about the Apollo Moonscape patch. I have the information from the A-B Emblem site, but online research has not revealed any more details. |

I have what I presume to be an original version of that patch. It has a bare thread back. So far, I have not found any documentation regarding this patch either. Crewpatches.com shows a type with a heavy black border resulting in a four-inch diameter as well as the more common three-inch version. Mine is the latter. |

Here is the Apollo Moonscape design as a vintage sticker (top) and decal. |

It is possible that the embroidered patches are not original to the program. There are numerous examples of souvenir patches having been produced from artwork that was only used by NASA (or its contractors) in decal or printed form. |

Very true Robert. The sticker and decal shared by Go4Launch certainly suggests that it was the inspiration for the motif used in the Saturn S-II Test patch. I had wondered if the color scheme of the moonscape in the Saturn S-II Test patch was unique or inspired from a decal or print design. Mystery solved. |

Seeing these pictures of the moon patch remind me of the picture I just saw on page 344 of "How Apollo Flew to the Moon." The artwork in the book is from two Galileo drawings of the Moon from 1610. Not real close but similar in nature. (By the way the book is great!) |

What an awesome referral! I did not know about this book, and I just bought it. I look forward to flipping to page 344. Thank you. |

These Galileo drawings of the Moon do suggest that the early Apollo moonscape design may have been inspired by Galileo.
