Topic: Collecting autographed mission patches

Has any embarked on a project to collect signed or autographed mission patches? I have thought about it a lot. I think it would be fun to put together. Perhaps mail out mission patches to the astronauts on the flight, have them sign and return. I know everyone has mixed results with this. Should everyone sign one patch? It would be a lot easier to have everyone sign different patches. It would certainly need a ton of patches to pull this off. |

I never did like signed patches myself. If signed on the front the result is usually a very rough looking signature (that is near impossible to authenticate later) and a messy looking patch.I've seen a few rare vintage patches signed on the front and it always makes me wince. You can get a neat signature on the back of a plastic-sealed patch but to be honest the back of a patch is pretty unappealing looking thing. It doesn't seem like the best place for a signature. |

I have the three mission patches signed by Mike Mullane and his book "Riding Rockets". Caught him on C-SPAN one morning talking about his book, so I sent him the book and his three mission patches (41-D, 36 and 27). And Tim Gagnon has been kind enough to autograph all the patches for me he has designed. |

I agree with Chris. I've rarely seen an embroidered patch with a signature that looks appealing. The only signed patches that look attractive to me are the beta cloth patches. (And even then, I think the unsigned ones are just as neat.)One option would be to print the artwork of your favorite patches as 8x10 photographs, with some white space (or black space) around the edges of the design for accumulating signatures. That way you can get the "patches" signed, but still end up with an attractive display piece. |

That's what I did for 135. I printed the patch onto a 8x10 card stock paper and sent it with a letter request to Captain Ferguson before the launch. Haven't gotten it back yet which isn't a surprise given that they are so busy. |

Eagle One did a set of autographed patches back in the early mid 90's. I got some good ones from that series. They had a spot on the patch for the Astronaut to sign on them. If I wanted a mission patch signed I would use a mission decal. |

I agree with Ben that a signed sticker is a good idea, but I only have two signed stickers in my collection and only of the same type: Skylab II wives patches. A VIP sticker number 545 with Ardis and Jacques on it and one Ardis signed and sent to me on getting the the TMA-13 ladies patch. As you can see I got them a good few years a part.I see problems with them. The two are in the some frame and you can see the aging of the two stickers as the sun has gotten to them and they have started to fade over the years. As the VIP patch was not kept in the dark for as long as the one signed by Ardis only, the white of the VIP sticker has yellowed a bit over time, and the Ardis only sticker still looks as good as new. I keep the frame with them well out of the sun. This helps keep the fading down and this will help with the yellowing. But you cannot stop it as this keeps going on as the sticker gets older. But they still look good. This fading and yellowing can bring down the price of the sticker, if you sell your stickers on. I have three signed patches all signed on the back and it seem you do not get the fading problems with them. So all in all I think in the end it is better to have signed patches as to stickers. |

I collect beta cloth patches and have found some great signed ones. The large white border is a natural for signatures, although I agree they also look very nice unsigned. |

I recently found these, which are patches made to be signed by specific astronauts and then signed by them before sale. Interesting concept! I'm not sure how I feel about that. You really wouldn't sew one on anything and if you framed it, it'd make more sense to have something else signed like a photo. |

Those were the ones that Eagle One Aerospace put out in the 90's. I will have to look up and see how much they were when they were selling them when they first came out. There was a Deke Slayton one also. |

I have only one signed patch. It is signed by Greg Jarvis and is a 51-L Challenger patch.My error is simple. I got it from Nate Sanders (Saunders ?) Autographs. At first, it was for sale along with the letter that it was mailed with in which Mr. Jarvis said that he was enclosing a signed photo and signed patch. Like a dummy I balked at the high price (4K I believe) and the items did not sell. The letter and patch were separated by Nate and sold separately. Before I realized it, the letter was sold and only the patch remained. I bought the patch and Nate was kind enough to send me a photocopy of the sold letter. I think that they should have remained together. If anyone reads this that has that original letter, perhaps he can sell me the letter or I can sell him the patch? JUST AN UPDATE: The letter has been found ! I did not find it..another CS'er Named Gary Dick found it on Ebay of all places ! It is for sale for only 18000.00 ! Wow !! At least I finally found it...THANKS GARY !! |

Does anyone know how many different autographed patches Eagle One produced? I have 24. I thought I had every one up to that point. Any ideas on quantities produced for each patch? |

Each was limited to 500 pieces, at least that is what it says on the coa. |

I think they did a Skylab 3 auto'ed by all 3 crew members. |
