Regarding the issuance of official Expedition 6 patches, I know there is some debate over whether A-B Emblem destroyed all known copies of the original crew version with Thomas, or whether they were, in fact, available at the KSC up to a year after the fact. I know that I've never had a whiff of the original version until now (only the far less than faithful Randy Hunt replica), but felt compelled to point out some distinctive elements for anyone pursuing this same patch:

  1. The Hunt replica is smaller.

  2. Unlike any known replica, the ISS is in metallic gold thread (replicas tend to have it in the same yellow as the names). The ISS is also much better detailed in the Real McCoy.

  3. The white center-line in the "6" orbital swoosh is significantly broader in the real thing versus the replicas.

  4. There is a rather raised blue "rim" or outline to the earth in the real version.
The one odd feature is the back to the final crew patch (still being sold), which is coated white; the back to the Thomas patch I have shown here is coated mostly black. Otherwise, they're exactly the same in virtually every detail.

I have Thomas and Pettit AB Emblem examples, both with black backings, so the white backing may be indicative of later produced Pettit patches.

I have looked up the sales of this AB Emblem patch on eBay and have only found one single patch sale in the last three years. So it looks like this is quite a rare patch.

Thanks for the feedback. I would guess that the later Pettit versions, indicative of all recent shuttle and ISS patches, are probably all white coated backs. Does anyone know of other launch dated ISS patches which have the black coating?

As a part two to this, did AB make an original STS-113 Thomas/Loria patch?

My ISS Expedition 6 AB Emblem patches both do have a plastic back — they both came directly from AB.

My Randy Hunt version of the Thomas patch has a white back and the Pettit patch has a black back.

I bought one of the Expedition 6 patches with Thomas on it at the US Space and Rocket Center gift shop in November of 2003. So they were selling that version at that time.

As a follow-up, there are a few online sources still displaying the Thomas version on their sites, but without exception, I've found these to be old images which haven't been updated.

As for A-B Emblem issuing a companion STS-113 patch with Thomas... this has only been speculated, never confirmed, that I know of. Most sources I've read indicate it was never officially produced. There does appear to be at least one replica version, origin unknown to me.

John Herrington's WSS portrait (JSC2000-E-21740) has him wearing a Loria/Thomas STS-113 emblem, although it looks more like a paper emblem than an embroidered patch.

I have a matched pair of STS-113 mission patches, Loria/Thomas, and Lockhart/Pettit. Both are not AB Emblem made patches as I also have the original AB Emblem patch for Lockhart/Pettit to compare them against. (There are slight differences in the colours blue and yellow and the backs of the patches, otherwise they are the same as the AB Emblem made patch.)

Sometimes, it is good to be lucky... Actually, it's always good to be lucky. I received my patch today from US-Insignia, a German company I had never done business with before. It was a Thomas patch with a black back.

All times are CT (US)
