Topic: Storage solutions for Beta cloth patches

I'm looking for a way to securely store a couple of 9"x9" beta cloth patches until I have them properly mounted and framed. Does anyone know of a good way to store these patches archivally so they aren't damaged/creased in any way? A 10" x 10" or larger thick (at least 2 - 3 mm) clear plastic sleeve (sort of like a sheet protector, but much thicker and less bend-able) would seem ideal, but A. I can't find a source for this online, and B. there might be other solutions out there that I haven't thought of. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. |

Just a thought, but you could look into 12" x 12" sheet protectors for scrapbooks. They will be more than large enough for your Beta cloth patches. I'm sure you could find them at any scrapbook store. |

If you search the company "Itoya" they have great scrapbooking materials, and art portfolio notebooks which are 9"X12" and larger. |

Does anyone know about the long term effects of these sleeves? I would think they might pull some of the silk screen off of the patches? Thanks. |

I spoke to a professional archivist about this. The best way to protect them over the very long term is to use archival mylar sleeves with acid-free cardboard behind them. If you keep taking them out and putting them back in, that can certainly abrade the silk-screen ink. As long as you don't remove them (preferably at all, but at least not very often) and keep them away from light as much as possible, they should be fine. |

I display my 4" patches in Mylar sleeves in an A4 Landscape Portfolio accompanied by a brief, illustrated history of the mission. The problem I have is getting full size 9" x 9" Beta patches to fit this format. Would I be right in thinking I'm going to significantly reduce the value of these patches if I trim them down to fit? Thanks |

Yes, you would be correct. Please resist the temptation to make them fit - there are larger sleeve sizes available, as noted by MikeSpace above. |

You do not want to trim your betas under any circumstances, the mission betas are a standard 9x9 inches, on the edges of some of these you can see 'registration lines' I believe they are called. Often desired by collectors.Also leaves more room for signatures for those who want to get them signed. I store my 9x9 betas in an 11x14 Itoya art portfolio. |
