With the "official" release of the STS-123 patch design, I've been thinking even further ahead. I know that STS-125 (the last HST servicing mission) is at least a calendar year away, but it occurs to me that (other than the final flight itself) this figures to be the last true milestone mission of the Shuttle era. As a patch enthusiast, I hope whatever design is chosen is appropriately dramatic.

Virtually all my favorite Shuttle patches are pre-51-L flights... I tend to prefer simple and elegant designs, and it strikes me that STS-125 would be appropriate for such a design.

So, two questions for info/discussion:

  1. I know I'm ahead of the game a bit with this, but with the flight crew designated and in training, is there anyone here who's "plugged in" and knows of any (credible) possibilities for the patch design?

  2. And do any other enthusiasts or creative types have any ideas or suggestions?
Thought this might be a fun topic even if it's a little early...

Just a comment:

Either for the last HST service mission or the last STS flight, perhaps the crew and/or patch designer could incorporate the Greek Omega symbol into the the patch.

How about that for starters?

Funny you should bring this up.

Drew Feustel was John Phillips support astronaut during Expedition 11. So during that time he and I emailed each other a number of times.

When the 125 crew was announced I sent Drew a couple of conceptual designs to get them thinking about a patch. Idiot that I am sometimes, I misspelled "Fuestel". Drew was nice about it but the last I heard about it from John he saw Drew looking the designs over during a shift in the ISS-MCC.

According to the manifest STS-125 isn't supposed to be the last shuttle flight, but it most certainly will be the last HST mission. I think the Omega idea is a great one. If Drew contacts me about working on the design, I'll certainly bring it up.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Greetings! Being a spaceflight enthusiast, and someone who LOVES to draw on the side (I freelance), I wanted to show my fellow space fanatics some concepts of mine for STS-125. It would be quite a feather in the cap to have something I've designed up in orbit!! Please let me know what y'all think! I would love for Cmdr. Altman and his crew to take a peek and see what they think.'

These are great ideas. I see echos of STS-109 in the third one. I assume you did that because of Scott Altman. I like the first one the best. Great Job!

I love the first one, especially the Navy reference in the boarder colors. I hope Capt. Altman sees this!

Daniel, The first one is VERY nice! I really like the CDR and PLT names on the solar arrays. If the crew saw it they would definately consider it. The last one reminds me of STS-103. Good luck!

Now that I'm thinking about it... any way of incorporating the mission numbers of past Hubble missions into the patch as a tribute (launch and servicing)? It could be obvious (mission numbers) or could be in code (stars).

WOW! Thanks for the kind words everyone. Yeah, past missions could be signified by stars (number of total missions to Hubble).

I love the "old school" aspect of the first design, (i.e. band around mission objective scene containing the surnames, kinda like STS-32). This would be SO cool to see this on one of those pumpkin suits, or a plaque in mission control! Hope the crew considers it!

p.s. Yep, this DEFINITELY needs to be the official crew emblem!

Here is my design:

Simply: Into the Hubble symbol, our home, the next step (Mars and beyond), the Hubble, navy blue in the background, seven stars for the crew, and a little bite of humour.

In addition to Daniel and Jorge, I also designed a patch for the STS-125 mission. I thought everyone might enjoy seeing it as well:

There are some creative and talented people here. Thanks for posting the insignia ideas they are really neat to see. It would be nice to see another CS member designed patch go into space.

Hate to spoil the fun. I emailed Drew about this thread and gave him the link.

He replied that the STS-125 patch is already submitted for approval. It should be released soon.

It was fun while it lasted though.

After STS-125 I think the next major mission will be the final one (whichever STS number that is). Hopefully all the guys who have put forward ideas for STS-125 could work on that and maybe that would be early enough in the process for consideration.

It will be a challenge to design that final patch that sums up all the programme has stood for - but it would be great if it was done by someone from this forum.

Great patches by the way...

Here is my first idea of a patch for the last STS Mission:

No names. No number. Only the Omega (as the finish), and in the shape of the Program Insignia the Earth and the Sun (environment of all the Program), six Shuttles (Enterprise silohuetted, Columbia and Challenger in the middle and Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour at the bottom).

One flag, the USA, country of the Shuttles and the Rainbow, with the colors of the flags of all the Countries who had flown aboard or worked on the Shuttle and the Astronaut Symbol honouring all the crews.

Came on guys. We need ideas to get the last patch made for one of our cS members!

While I think it would be great for another cS reader to have their design fly as an official mission patch, my own hope for the final flight's insignia would be that the crew would work with Robert McCall, as to bring the program full circle.

There are 13 or so missions remaining, which should provide ample opportunity for others to submit their designs, but I think it would be quite special if the STS-1 and STS-133 patches shared artists.

I believe Robert McCall is an extremely talented artist, someone I admire and deserving of all he's earned.

That being said I respectfully disagree that the final STS mission patch should go to him by default. He designed Apollo 17, Apollo-Soyuz, STS-1 STS-41B, STS-71 and the Astronaut Memorial emblem. I'm sure there are others that I've missed.

Of course it doesn't matter what we think, the crew (as it should be) will choose an artist to work with.

While I would never turn down such an offer, I'd like to see the "collectSPACE Artists Collective" (and you know who you are) design it just as a team of artists designed STS-115.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

PS Jorge: I like your design but I think the flight crew will want their names on it as well as their specific mission objectives represented.

Tim I agree with you in the names topic, and with Marwin2, do not forget it is a hurl mission and like Apollo 11 they will be writing a history page...

I know it must be hard, so I'm leaving an empty circle around the patch to put they names or a legend as in Apollo 13. (We do not forget Lovell, Swigert and Haise because they names were no wrote there.)

But like Apollo 11 also, they will be always in the history, with names or without.

And the insignia is an outline: I want ideas of all of you, my friends!

(Once more, excuse my poor english. I hope you could understand what I want to say).

What about a different color for the omega like silver or a more light one. Furtheron I would like to see a more real shape of the shuttle.

Does the rounded triangle "containing all the symbolic" represent the shape of the patch for STS-1?

Great patch, Jorge.

I will change to silver the Omega. Will be a good idea.

(The triangle represents the shape of the Space Shuttle gold-white-dark blue and light blue of the Program Insignia).

As requested, some little changes on Shuttle...

Harald, I tried to change Omega to silver, but it is not a good idea. I do not like the color combination, and may be too much coloured for my original idea. Perhaps the only thing may be to put the names when they will be known, an the number on left wing of the shuttle...

Thank you for your comments fellows!

Jorge, if you made the shuttle going towards the constellation Orion, it would make a great transition to the next manned program.

The above are superb design, same deal for the very first Hubble drawing of a posible mission patch. Is the STS-125 patch already released to the public eye?

Just an aside for buckeyecal - Since you mentioned being an OSU fan, did you know it was no mistake that the O shape of the STS-70 patch is stylized exactly like the OSU symbol. Nancy (Sherlock) Currie has a degree from OSU and added it as the design shape. STS-70 was also an all Ohio crew (4 original residents and 1 honorary one.)

Finally I changed the golden star of the astronaut symbol by the Orion constellation. Now the shuttle is flying to the next space program...

Also the Columbia and Challenger stars have seven points each one.

No more changes until the names of the crew, I hope.

Daniel, got an email from the STS-125 crew today. I had sent them a link to this thread. They enjoyed the enthusiastic support for their mission and wanted to let us know they liked all of the designs - but especially your first one above. The one labeled #3.

Thought you'd like to know.

A few folks were throwing ideas out there of the crew patch for the final shuttle mission. I wanted to share my design with my fellow cSers and get some feedback.

The patch shows all 5 shuttles' namesakes sailing off into history, as they always will be with us (going left to right, Atlantis, Challenger, Columbia, Discovery, and Endeavour) and with Enterprise flying in formation... replete with tail cone. Below is a crescent earth, from which all spaceflight has originated. The omega symbol represents the final mission. The shuttles head out with a 'wake' of stars, 29(took that idea from STS-49)... the number of years the shuttle had flights (including '77s ALT flights). Beyond the shuttles lies the future of space with images of the moon, mars, the big dipper(that's in memory of 51L and 107), Orion, and the star formation from the Constellation program logo, finally the red vector from the NASA meatball in honor of all associated with the shuttle program. Forgive me for being partial, but I think it looks real sweet!
