On the 115 patch they illustrate the P6 truss at its current location-and they add a starboard solar wing.

On the 116 patch there is one on the port side and two on the starboard side. Which makes sense if they relocate P6 to its permanent location.

On the 117 patch they only have one on the port side and one on the starboard side. The wing on the port side is highlighted in gold to illustrate that they are bringing that piece up.

Can anyone explain this apparent discrepancy? Or is it that the patches were designed long ago and the manifest has been reworked.

I'm not sure about this but I believe that before STS-107, STS-116 was only a crew rotating mission and the original STS-116 patch was designed before February 2003.

The current manifest is this:

  • STS-115:
Second port truss segment (ITS P3/P4)
Second set of solar arrays and batteries

  • STS-116:
Third port truss segment (ITS P5)
    SPACEHAB single cargo module
    Integrated Cargo Carrier (ICC)

  • STS-117:
Second starboard truss segment (ITS S3/S4) with Photovoltaic Radiator
Third set of solar arrays and batteries

  • STS-118:
    SPACEHAB Single Cargo Module
Third starboard truss segment (ITS S5)
    External Stowage Platform 3 (ESP3)

115 and 116 are pretty cool I think. 117 I don't care for but that's just me. Interesting that there hasn't been a regular circular insignia for a shuttle mission for a while.

If anyone knows where I can get the smaller version of shuttle mission lapel pins (smaller than 1") let me know. I'd like to get one for 115 since I hope to be at that launch.

12A.1 (STS-116) is the only one that is really not represented accurately. This patch has been designed for quite a few years now, but at no time did we have three arrays at the completion of that flight. 13A accurately shows the addition of S3/S4 and the second half of P6 retracted (first half is retracted on 12A.1).

Interesting point...I'm not sure if that's supposed to be three arrays or all four final configuration, but the ISS is incorrect in either case.

I'm surprised they did not correct it.

Thinking it over it could be that they were illustrating the completed ISS. After all there is precedence, Expeditions 1, 3, 5, 6, 8 all did the same.

Yea, but they recently made it 'official' in not-so-many words that the Russian power platform (the arrays on the z-axis) were cancelled, among other things.

Maybe they will read this topic and make it better.

A friend of mind in Houston heard the Russian Science Tower referred to as the Science Fiction Tower.

Apparently there were doubts about it for a while.

The 116 patch depicts the completed ISS with all the truss segments. You can clearly see two radiators on the starboard side, so there are S3/S4 and S6 (STS-119) in this configuration. The Russian Power Platform and Solar Arrays are also there, but were cancelled as said. So this is a mistake that was not corrected.

Oh, there is another nice detail in the description text:

"The seven stars of the constellation Ursa Major are used to provide direction to the North Star, which is superimposed over the installation location of the P5 truss on ISS."

With Reiter scheduled to return on "116", I'm kind of surprised they didn't have his name along side Williams on the patch tab. I guess they'll modify it as we get closer to the flight.

The STS-116 patch will NOT be updated with Reiter's name. If you read the page for the STS-116 patch on my site you could have read what Christer Fuglesangs has to say about it...

IF Clayton Anderson is launched aboard STS-117 in June, what does this do to design of the patch? Will they add an "Anderson" tab on the bottom. And of course the redesigns of the STS-118 and STS-120 patches are also forthcoming IF the ISS crew switch takes place one mission earlier. Set the August record, Suni...PLEASE!

I have only one advise, buy the STS-118 patch now, before it get changed! (and also the 117 patch) and yes a tab is an option for 117...

In addition to putting the "Anderson" tab on STS-117, would they just omit Anderson from the STS-118 patch? Or would they replace Anderson on 118 with Dan Tani and if so would they put the next US astronaut in line for a tour on the ISS on STS-120.

In my opinion, they should let Tani still go up on STS-120 and let Anderson stay longer.

So here's how that shakes out:

  • add Anderson (tab) to STS-117
  • omit Anderson from STS-118
  • leave STS-120 alone
What do you folks think?

If they decide to bring Suni Williams home on "117", I don't think they would have Anderson return on the "118" mission.

That would be a VERY short ISS increment for him.

My guess is that they'll have Williams return as originally scheduled on "118".

Anderson was originally to launch at the end of June (on STS-118) and return in early-September (on STS-120), a stay of less than three months. Tani is trained for tasks on STS-120 that require he stay with that mission.

As it stands now, STS-118 is scheduled to launch in early August and STS-120 is targeted for late October. If Anderson stays on STS-118, then his time in orbit is about the same. If he launches on STS-117, he'll gain an extra two months. Either way, Tani launches on STS-120.

You know, when you look at it, the STS-117 design is not terribly "tab-friendly" as it's not based on a circle or oval. Making a tab that doesn't look like garbage bolted on would be somewhat difficult...

The decision has been made. STS-117 will launch with Anderson and return Williams. Anderson will return on STS-120.

Will NASA have 117 and 118 reissued with the change of names on them?

Will a change of crew photo for 117 be done as well?

Concerning the related patches I was told that AB Emblem has been informed by NASA on that change but no order to change the patches yet.

I asked AB and they answered:
Since we are the official contractor for NASA they usually notify us of up coming changes well in advance. We are working on the STS-117 patch they are only having a tab made to be sewn on. We don't have a date yet as to when it will be available.

I bought my 117 lapel pins months ago when I thought they were going to launch in March. Aby idea when the revamped ones will go on sale? Unless it is soon I suppose it might be too late to get one before departing for the space coast, which I expect to do on June 7.

What's with the different shade of blue for the rocker? Shouldn't it match the rest of the patch?

By "rocker" I guess you are referring to the Anderson tab? If so, it is the same color as the "space" above the Earth. Personally, I think it nicely balances the design.

Ah, just noticed that. I was looking at the lighter blue just above the rocker. Concur, that does work.

It is that logo. And the gold letters above his logo say "Office of Naval Research."

Anderson's hat is the Expedition 15 "XV" orbital-trace removed from the patch (the same way it appears on the shirts).

Edit: Sturckow's hat, upon closer look, is the USMC logo.

That Texas background is one of the standard backgrounds at Williams & Williams, where I know some of the astronaut nametags come from. They do not advertise the astro-type wings in public; they only have a USAF astronaut wing and a NASA meatball wing at front.

Regarding the NASA STS-117 emblem, they could at least get their web sites to display the same information...

This site, the shuttle site if you please, does not mention Anderson. But this site, has it right.

If anyone wants to tell them to fix this, they're most welcome. I'm tired.
