The New York Post reports today that Garrett Reisman wore the New York Yankees' logo on his EMU during yesterday's spacewalk, "along with a '27' on his equipment. The Bombers won their 27th championship last year."

This is the first time I can recall a US astronaut wearing any "commercial" logo on an EMU, even if it is as a fan. Call me a traditionalist, but this is getting a little too close to a "NASCAR look" for my tastes, though it (presumably) wasn't paid for. Once you cross the line, what's next, Mobil 1? Perhaps I'd feel differently if it were my team, but maybe the shuttle program is coming to an end at the right time after all...

He wore the Yankees "NY" on the cover of his wrist checklist like Clay Anderson did with the University of Nebraska "N" during STS-131. I have no problem with sports teams (pro or college) on the checklists, the suits however are a different matter.

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. In some ways marketing has been a part of the space program since Apollo. Speedmaster watches and Hasselblad cameras come to mind. Were those product placements?

I think we need to take a breath here. This is no big deal. Astronauts are regular people who have favorite teams just like the rest of us.

Reisman is a life-long Yankee fan. He could be flying on his last mission and he wanted to give his team some props. The first thing I thought of when I saw it was: "Did Steve Bowen wear a Red Sox logo on his checklist?"

Bottom line is the same day that Reisman wore it the Red Sox beat the Yankees, so as far as I'm concerned he can wear it throughout the flight.

There's an upside to all this, too -- media coverage. A quick scan shows that ESPN, the New Jersey Star Ledger, CBS News and the aforementioned New York Post all ran stories about a spacewalk they might not have otherwise covered. Sure, its trivial in the scheme of things, but its the type of story that the average joe/jane can relate to and it helps remind the public that people are in space...

Let's be honest here -- Tim supports this because he has a commemorative patch in the works: "First Wrist Checklist MLB Logo."

Don't hammer the guy because he's a Yankee fan. They get enough of that down here on earth.

Not to be outdone, Michael Good has drawn the logo for Notre Dame, his alma mater, on his cuff checklist for today's STS-132 spacewalk.

Good stuff. Kind of like that Army Navy rivalry pranks that went on during Gemini 6/7.

All times are CT (US)
