Expedition 23 will be the 23nd long duration mission on-board the International Space Station (ISS).

Expedition 23 begins with the Soyuz TMA-16 undocking in March 2010. Three new crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz TMA-18.

  • Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, station commander
  • JAXA astronaut Soichi Noguchi
  • NASA astronaut T.J. Creamer
  • Roscosmos cosmonauts Alexsandr Skvortsov and Mikhail Korniyenko, as well as NASA astronaut Tracy Caldwell, who will launch in April 2010 on Soyuz TMA-18 and return in September 2010 on the same vehicle

I believe that Soyuz TMA-18 will dock first at ISS and then Soyuz TMA-16 will undock...

Congratulations Tim and Jorge! A clue on Tim's website:
Then later that year Tim and Jorge were asked by astronaut TJ Creamer to design the Expedition 22 and 23 increment mission emblems...

Nice work, guys. Like Expedition 20 and STS-127, a very 21st-century design. Expedition 21 and 22 were major misfires (IMO of course), so this is a welcome return to form.

Unlikely, Exp. 21 patch had a very similar shape to our Exp. 22 one... Knowing it we would have changed it in a very quite different shape.

(Anyway, I still like the idea of the patch, watching the Earth from the ISS...)

I think that Jeff Williams liked our Exp. 22 patch for that reason - it was an easy transition from Exp. 21 to Exp. 22.

The thing to remember is Jorge and I submitted our design for Exp. 22 months before Exp. 21 was released so there's no way we could have known what Lena de Winne was creating - nor did she know what we were up to.

Love them or hate them it's the crew's decision.

With the permission of the crew, here is the name version of the patch:

This version of the patch will not be official until after the crew launches.

Does anyone know when this patch will become available from AB Emblem considering 21 and 22 became available very close together?

YUCK. Looked SO much better without the names. But I understand why they produce these.

By the way, I think the source of my confusion regarding name/no-name ISS patches, which led to my query on the Expedition 24 patch thread, is that I haven't seen Expedition 16, 18 or 19 patches with surnames. That's why I wondered if all ISS expedition patches are being produced in "names" and "no-names" versions.

Clarification? Robert? Anyone?

I can tell you that Exp. 23, 25, 26 and 27 had/will have two versions: with and without names. In the case of Exp. 22 we made it with names (and the crew themselves made the no names version after it). As Robert told us before, all the crews are making now a no named version in anticipation of a last minute crew change, and also, a named one who becomes official after the launch of all the astronauts/cosmonauts involved on the patch.

As you can see from this photo taken here at the Museum, she was signing her name that way in July this year.

AB Emblem has received official approval of their Expedition 23 patch from NASA and production has begun.

An error was recently discovered in the design of the Expedition 23 insignia and judging by the photos taken today of the Soyuz TMA-17 crew at their pre-launch press conference, the patches they are wearing have now been corrected.

Based on the orientation of the U.S. flag, the Russian flag was reproduced on the official artwork (and therefore on the produced-to-date patches and pins) reversed. Rather than appearing as it should (from left to right) white, blue and red, the art had the order of the colors flipped.

In this photo of TJ Creamer, and in others taken of Soichi Noguchi and Oleg Kotov, you can see that the patch displays the Russian colors properly.

There is no word yet if AB Emblem will similarly correct their now commercially available reproductions, nor what company produced the new patches for the crew. NASA has yet to update the artwork on its website, as well.

Just to set the record straight. The question of flag orientation was addressed during the designing of the patch.

Having the Russian flag appear with colors red, blue, white as at the top of this thread was approved by the crew.

It was only last week that TJ emailed me to say that the flag was incorrect. The rule of protocol states that the upper left hand corner of the flag as it flies on a pole should remain the upper left hand corner when the flag is displayed vertically.

Get the incorrect ones while you can folks - they won't last long.

We talked about it about more than eight months ago, isn't it Tim? And then the crew was okay with the view: both (Russia and USA flags) were hanging in a mirror way from the Japan flag...

The crew might have approved it, but even astronauts and cosmonauts have bosses...

Of course you are correct but what I was trying to say is that even the "bosses" missed this detail in the approval process.

When the question was raised with the crew and Oleg signed off on it, Jorge and I assumed the orientation of the flag was correct. I am surprised that NASA and Roscosmos missed it during the formal approval process.

Just another interesting story to add to your site.

NASA has updated their official artwork (though it has yet to populate through their websites) to reflect the change to the Russian flag.

This insignia's official description:
The focal point of the Expedition XXIII emblem illustrates the beautiful planet Earth in the black expanse of space.

The International Space Station (ISS) is shown traveling in its orbit around Earth. The ISS orbital path flies through the XXIII to show that this increment is building upon the missions that have gone on before and laying the groundwork for future missions. This illustrates the work being performed aboard the orbiting complex that will lead the way to eventual missions to the moon, Mars and beyond.

The mission designation uses Roman numerals to illustrate the home nations of the crew, which are also represented by their national flags. The two stars represent the two teams that make up this expedition crew.

Where is the (corrected) version available? Other than AB Emblem, $7.50 is too much for shipping one 4" patch especially this one that can fit in any standard envelope.

Just received a batch from AB Emblem with the coded stickers...but they are still the original version, not the corrected ones.

I received my Exp.23 patch at the end of January and it was the "wrong" version. I then asked AB regarding the new version and they sent it to me some days ago.
