Can anyone enlighten me why the crew patch was changed for STS-35 from the original design? Was it just because of crew changes? And why was the crew changed - Brand for Leestma; Lounge for McBride; Gardner for Richards? |

I believe that Brand replaced McBride, who left NASA. I am not aware of any changes in the mission emblem. You may be referring to the original STS-61E mission, which was cancelled after the Challenger disaster. |

Richards and Leestma were reassigned to STS-28, an earlier mission, and as mentioned McBride left NASA following Challenger to pursue other opportunities. The launch manifest changed significantly after Challenger (Astro-1 was delayed almost 5 years as a result), and coupled with the 2 1/2 year stand-down, astronaut assignments were changed as circumstances and requirements dictated (although it made sense to keep the Astro-1 scientific team of Parker, Hoffman, Durrance and Parise assigned to the mission). |

Thanks for answers. The reason I asked was that I have two very different patches for Astro 1 in my collection.The first has US flag as background with sun upper right and shuttle lower right. A comet in on left. The second, the one flown, is predominantly blue with a star field towards left and a gold edged black shuttle trailing a red/white plume on right. |

Interestingly, I stumbled onto an online scan archives of NASA JSC news releases from 1984 and 1985, which included news of then-upcoming flight crews.As late at 1989, the 61E crew was scheduled to fly as STS-35, including McBride as CDR, according to a KSC newsletter. Based on the above archives, it's my supposition that Brand got 35 because he had been training for an upcoming Spacelab flight - first 51H (later 51K, I think), EOM-1; then he got switched to Spacelab 4 (61D), then when that got postponed, for the combined EOM-1/2 flight scheduled for 1986. Science teams usually stayed the same for Spacelab flights through delays, though pilots and commanders changed. (In the case of 61D, Brand and Griggs were reassigned from that flight onto 61K, the EOM mission.) |

The STS-61E flight was going to use the telescopes on the IPS/Spacelab pallets to view Comet Halley. Jon McBride had been named as the original CDR for STS-35 in December of 1988 then left NASA in May of 1989. |
