This could be interesting: Child's Drawing Will Become the Logo of the Next Soyuz Space Expedition(Roscosmos release) Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), facilitated by the space agencies of the other states, as well as by social organizations and mass media, invites children in Russia and other countries to participate in the International contest of children's drawings "Let's Design a Logo for Soyuz TMA-14 Crew." Soyuz TMA-14 with a Russian cosmonaut, US astronaut and space flight participant aboard is planned for launch in March, 2009. Soyuz TMA-14 prime and backup crews, Russian cosmonauts and US astronauts expressed their readiness to take active part in selecting the best children's drawings, together with the experts from Roscosmos, other space agencies, and public. One of these drawings will become Soyuz TMA-14 crew's emblem. Approved by Roscosmos Administrator, the emblem gets the status of the official crew logo. The logo-patch is put on the suits of three crew members: a cosmonaut, an astronaut and a spaceflight participant. The winners (places 1, 2 and 3) will have the opportunity to visit Baikonur space port to participate in the seeing-off ceremony of the Soyuz TMA-14 crew in March next year. The contest is organized by the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos), the Union of Russian Charity Organizations (URCO). Prime sponsor is the Russian Insurance Center Underwriting Public Company. The contest is aimed at advancing humanistic ideas in the youth community, stimulating the public to generate healthy social environment, promoting the space activities, developing children's artistic creativity. The designs (paintings, graphic arts, computer arts) marked "Logo Contest" (in the e-mail subject or on the envelope) shall be mailed to: The Union of Russian Charity Organizations (URCO), 10, Cosmonaut Volkov st., Moscow, 127299, or e-mailed to: sbor@sbornet.ru, from Oct. 25 to Dec. 25, 2008. Target age group of the International Children's Contest is from 6 to 15. The authors shall provide some personal data, such as detailed mail address and telephone number, together with their patch design drawings. Information about the age of the participant is mandatory. Authorship credibility is under the responsibility of the person submitted the drawing. |

Nice job...however I'm pretty sure that the Russians routinely put the mission commanders name in the middle...as is his position in the crew cabin. |

You may also want to print Padalka and Soyuz in Russian (Cyrillic). |

ShuttleDiscoveryGreat job! Just a suggestion but you might want to make sure the ISS looks as it will when TMA-14 flies. I'm not sure - but I think STS-119 will fly before TMA-14. If so the solar arrays will be complete. You've got a great future! |

If this is true, and the patch uses Jorge's art, unless Jorge is under 15 as well (which I am pretty sure he is not) I would be concerned with being disqualified for breaking the rules. In my experience, during youth contest's such as these, the one thing judges tend to look for is unassisted artwork... |

Robert, but all the images he could find on oldest patches to recreate the Soyuz may be made by adults... (And yes, your're right... I'm not under 15. It's a pity)  |

I could be wrong, but my understanding of the contest based on solely the release is to have students draw, either by hand or computer, their designs. I think the originality of the design might weigh more than the art itself, as Roscosmos could always have a professional artist 'polish' the design before it flies. |

I understand what you mean Robert, but I'm not really sure what to do about it. I've looked at some other Soyuz patches and decided to simplify the Soyuz slightly in my patch. Do anyone think I should go any further to change it? |

Good job Shuttle Discovery. May I say something? Try to use only two colors in Soyuz, f.e. only the two blues without white, as if the sun were hitting it from above not from behind. Then it would be less similar to the "12".Good luck my friend. I like too much your patch.  |

Better, but... why don't you choose a Soyuz image more similar to the TM-31/32 or the TM-34/TMA-1? I think they are better for your design?  |

Please, let the kid design something and send it in. The idea is to have someone aged 6 to 15 come up with an orginal idea of his or her own, not to lecture someone in that age group on how to do this. |

ShuttleDiscovery, I know how difficult it is to create something original. Someday I'll post my first drawings for Skylab, ASTP and the Shuttle. I wrote to everyone I could think of who might offer me advice and who I thought would improve my chances of being selected. While everyone here only wishes you success and wants to offer you the benefit of our collective experience, trust YOUR instincts. It has been correctly noted that the judges are looking for YOUR work. Don't worry about being too polished - they will "polish" the chosen art for all of the uses required. If I were you, I would break out the drawing pad and colored pens and markers and hand draw your original design. By doing that instead of submitting a computer assisted graphic, there can be no doubt that YOU created it. In fact you can even have it Notarized. I wish you the best. The next art you post should be the one that is already on it's way for consideration. You are talented and I know your artwork will one day orbit the Earth. Good Luck and have fun. |

Your daughter did a great job Ken. I would suggest check spelling. I beleive Barratt has two "T's". I once lost out on a patch job because I misspelled a name. Also maybe add a line to indicate where the descent module separates from the Service Module. Good to see young talent. |

Roscosmos update (November 29) with a couple of the designs, some very nice ones!!! (Hint: right click on the images and look up the file names in the properties to see the name and age of the artists) It is pleasant to say that we have received more than fifty proposals from young artists. Names of the winners will be announced in one month. You can find more information about the Contest and see the best drawings in Roscosmos web-page.Now Gennady Padalka, Russian cosmonaut, and Michael Barratt, NASA astronaut, look through the drawings also, and they even have picked some favorites. At the end of December, they will select the best proposals. But the Contest is not over yet! Michael and Gennady are looking forward to getting more interesting and attracting logo designs. The best drawing will appear in the crew logo. After that, it gets approved by Roscosmos Head, and becomes an official emblem of the Soyuz TMA-14 mission. The logo-patch will be put on the space suits of Soyuz TMA-14 crew. |

The winners of the contest will be announced during a press conference in Mission Control Moscow on Monday, December 29. All the artwork submitted can be seen at the Roscosmos website. |

Following a live link-up with the ISS crew, Roscosmos announced in Mission Control Moscow that Anna Chibiskova (12) of Moscow is the winner of the "Let's design a logo for the Soyuz TMA-14 crew" contest. Her painting of two hands holding the Earth was chosen by commander Gennadi Padalka as the central element for his crew patch. Both a neutral version without names (Russian crews are only officially confirmed shortly before launch) and one including that of Padalka, Michael Barratt and Charles Simonyi were released on the the Roscosmos website today. Second and third prize winners in the contest were Kaitlin Riley (12) from New York, U.S.A., and Pyatkin Stanislav (11) from Uglegorsk, the residential area of a former strategic missile base in the Amur Region in Eastern Russia. Now known as Vostochny Cosmodrome, it is slated to eventually replace Baikonur as the primary launch site for Russian manned space missions. An extra winner was also announced: Roma Kuznetsov from Kazakhstan, the country where Baikonur is situated. "Kazakhstan is our reliable partner in space programs, so let a boy from Kazakhstan become one of the winners", according to Roscosmos head Anatoly Perminov, who, for the first time in Russian space history, also headed a ceremony in which a Russian flight patch was officially approved. |
