Who made the best Apollo mission patch for each of the Apollo missions? One patch is the best one of each for the missions.

I am not talking about the official patch made by AB Emblem, but all of them: Lion, AB, Eagle, Swissartex or Randy Hunt's. Look at the colours, design, the stitching, how 3D is it, how big it is or small and the look of the patch. Which one made the best?

Here is a example for you, the Apollo 11 patch: Most of us would say it was the patch made by Eagle Crest that goes on the isolation outfits that is the best Apollo 11 patch. Yes or no? It's up to you, but it is for me.

Okay, one more from me for you, the Apollo 14 patch: Now I think it's the patch made by the Lion Brothers that is the best Apollo 14 patch for me.

OK. This is my opinion.
  • Apollo 1, Texas Art Embroidery
  • Apollo 7, Randy Hunt (2005-6 not remember exactly)
  • Apollo 8, Lion Brothers
  • Apollo 9, Astronomy Now (2003-4)
  • Apollo 10, Texas Art E.
  • Apollo 11, Texas Art E.
  • Apollo 12, LB (hallmarked)
  • Apollo 13, unknown origin, horses in same color (AB?)
  • Apollo 14, Lion Brothers
  • Apollo 15, AB
  • Apollo 16, Lion Brothers
  • Apollo 17, AB (4", eagle in white)
Interesting post. I like it.
Jorge.

Yes that's good, one or two I have not seen before: Apollo 7 Randy Hunt, Apollo 9 Astronomy Now, Apollo 1/10 Texas Art.

I think the Apollo 13 patch is by Swissarttex?

And I am with you on the patches for Apollos 1, 8, 12, 16 but I'd have to have a good look at AB Apollo 15. I think the best Apollo 17 patch is AB 4.5" initial patch.

Yes Butch, you have the reason and I must to clarify some questions:
  • Apollo 1: I do not know the manufacturer of the one I mean. Perhaps LB one (except the yellow border) may be the most exactly one.
  • Apollo 7: you could see it in [ap07-em5]
  • Apollo 9, also, is in [ap09-em4] (I can send you a pic of both patches if you send me your email.)
  • Apollo 10 is from Grumman.
  • Apollo 13 is from AB (the first one they made).
  • Apollo 17: may be the best patch in 4.5" but they have a nice one in 4", with the eagle in white and blue-grey border, absolutely unknown (the first one AB made before to change the eagle into blue) most faithfully of the original artwork than the 4.5" (the letters were exactly in the same size)
  • And Apollo 15 AB has also more fidelity -for me- with the artwork than LB (look at the names, as in A-17)
Cheers. Jorge

Can you please post a scan for the Apollo 1 patch made by Texas Art Embroidery and the Apollo 9 patch made by Astronomy Now? I too have not seen these.

I like the Apollo 1 patch made by Stylized Emblem Co of Hollywood. Regarding the Apollo 7 patch, I agree that Randy Hunt's replica is very nice, until I recently found this little gem on eBay. It looks like the one on Gene Dorr's website. It's a tiny patch, about 70mm at it's vertical axis by 92mm at it longest horizontal axis.

The Apollo 1 I mean is the Genedorr's [ap01-em2]. Unfortunately I do not have one. I would like to have it! The Apollo IX is in [ap09-em4]. (A very nice A-7. Would you get one more for me? )

Unfortunately also, I was sending to Randy some faithful Apollo artworks to made new best replicas than we can get at that time. The A-7 was the first one and Apollo 1, the second, was never made... he passed away before. I would like to have a grateful regard for him at this time. (Cheers, Randy! I miss you )

Hi Jorge, regarding the Apollo 1 patch you mentioned, it was made by the Stylized Emblem Co. I purchased mine from the Regency Superior auction and it had the company's sticker still attached. Maybe in the next auction, they will have more.

Donn Willis sold one not too long ago.

As for the Apollo 7 patch, sorry this is the only one that I have seen up for sale so far.

The crew patch is by far the best one, but very hard to find. I lost out to Chris not too long ago.

Jorge, are you the one that had asked Randy to make the original Apollo 11 patch based on Mike Collin's drawing? That's a nice one too. I also like the concept patches made for Apollo 17 that was based on Robert McCall's drawings.

Nice to hear your notices... but very sad because I'm jealous of you and your patches! I will still over eBay looking for them.

No Andrew. I was not. I only tried to made with him a perfect replica (yes, replica) of the original ones... but we cannot.

Hi Jorge, I will keep my eyes out for you on eBay if you want.

Regarding the Apollo 15 patch, that's a hard choice for me. Although AB's is more faithful, I think LB is better made. Although the silver or gold "XV" crew patches would get my vote.

For the Apollo 12 patch, I like the crew, star variant version.

For the Apollo 8 patch, I like the patch that has the distinctive segmented pattern of the light blue threads forming the oceans that was recently sold on the HA auction a few months ago, over $13,000 (flown, of course).

Hello Andrew, I agree with you about Apollo 15 gold or silver XV... but I like more the AB one because its faithful repro of the original artwork.

The A-12 with star variant is, yes the best one (I have not it!).

And the A-8... Man, 13,000 dollars! With that price you could buy the entire capsule!

I take your offer. Yes please, keep your eyes on eBay with me, looking for the 7, 12... and Grumman 10, please.

Jorge.

Actually, while the Lion Brothers Apollo 1 mission patch has more detail in regards to the crew module, the AB Emblem reproduction is far more closer to the real thing. It is as close as you'll get to the actual Apollo 1 crew patch that was made by Stylized Emblem Company.
