Those of you who know me understand how fortunate I feel to have been able to work with multiple flight crews. I began this effort to design a crew patch in 1973 after reading the article about Skylab 1 by Frank Kelly Freas. I contacted everyone I could who I thought could help. I even wrote to John Glenn thinking he might intercede on my behalf. I was young and dumb.

In 1985 Bob Crippen answered my letter and invited me to submit designs for STS-62A. I was thrilled but then the mission was canceled.

My dream didn't come true until 2004 when John Phillips chose me to help with the Expedition 11 patch.

After that success I encouraged Bill C. (Space Emblem Art) to join me in submitting designs for STS-122. Bill and I also teamed up on an Enterprise Commemorative patch project.

I am so glad that I was able to provide Jorge (KAPTEC) an opportunity to let his artwork impress the crews and see his designs fly. We have worked together on seven patches to date.

Jorge and I agree that we should share our good fortune with all of our cS friends with similar dreams. Therefore we want to invite you to send me your artwork. But you must read and accept the following conditions:

  1. The ONLY thing we can promise is that astronauts will see your design.

  2. IF they like it, they will contact you or contact me as an intermediary. It's their choice. No promises that they will. This is only an invitation to have your work seen.

  3. If you are contacted you can never abuse the privilege and share their email address.

  4. If you submit a design to me - you CANNOT post it anywhere or publish it. If any design is released before NASA approves it - then that design is abandoned. They will start over and you may never have another opportunity.
If this is agreeable to you. Please do the following:
  1. Choose a mission, research it and create your best design(s). On the page include a brief description and your contact information. Nothing prior to STS-132 and Expedition 27 - patches for missions before that are already in work.

  2. The crew names must be in a sans serif font.

  3. There can be no gradients.

  4. There can be only 8 colors (Rules 2, 3 and 4 per NASA.)

  5. Please send them to me as a PDF file. If you can't I can turn them into a PDF at work.

  6. Jorge and I are willing to "polish up" raw artwork but we won't change anything - this is your design.
If this works - if any of you design a patch that flies, the credit is yours. The only thing we are doing is providing an opportunity for your art to "speak for itself."

Good Luck,
Tim

Great idea Tim and Jorge!

Please note that currently, this does not apply to Soyuz launches. At the moment, those are mainly based on artwork submitted to Roscosmos by children.

Good point Erik - Please know that this is NOT a contest and Jorge and I are not benefitting in any way. I am only looking to help get your artwork seen.

Thanks Bill I'll look for it.

Sounds like fun, I'd like to have a go but I can't find any list of crews for that far in advance, can anyone tell me where to find it?

You don't need the crew names - just research the mission. When the crew is announced they will see it. But until then at least your artwork will be inside the astronaut office.

The idea is to be seen and impress.

Bob I got it. Please let me a couple of days. I'm finishing a master and tomorrow will have the final examination...

After it I will be with you. (Nice idea, by the way).

It's a very interesting challenge trying to execute a design in only 8 colors, as it's extremely limiting. Makes you appreciate the work of the insignia designers all the more.

Any word on future patch designs? Just curious about the submitted ideas, and what the astronauts thought of the artwork they may have seen from some of the people here.

Guys, I know it is a unpleased news but the astronauts usually ONLY answer us if the artwork attracts their attention... We send dozens of ideas for each flight and most of the times got no answer.

Tim, are you agree with me?

I know it is frustrating not to hear anything but the STS-132 crew has just started working on their patch (based on an email I received with 25+ designs on it that they had received).

It took me 31 years to get a design to fly. My only goal is to help every one else NOT wait that long.

STS-133 crew has not yet been named so I have no one to send the artwork to. The STS-134 crew has not yet begun the process of designing their patch.

I can promise all of those who sent me artwork - it will be (or has been) forwarded to the appropriate crew. When I know something and have permission to say something I will be more than happy to do so.

Yes, like Jorge has said - the crew(s) have to see something they want to develop before we hear anything. But in this case - no news can be good news.

Here's an idea: once the final designs for 134 and 133 are released, how about we post the designs we all came up with? I'd love to see what we all had in mind, and how close our ideas came to reality.
