On June 22, 2008, Soyuz TMA-13 spaceflight participant Richard Garriott (and son of astronaut Owen Garriott) wrote on his blog: One of the crew also came up to show me a "space cover," which is an envelope to be signed and stamped on the day of our launch. Momentously, it was the first item I have seen bearing the names of my whole crew: Yuri Lonchikov, Mike Fincke, and Richard Garriott! The gallery accompanying this entry included a photo of the cover, with the file name "first TMA-13 patch with my name": Soyuz TMA-13 is scheduled to launch in October 2008 with Garriott, ISS Expedition 18 commander Mike Fincke and flight engineer Yuri Lonchakov. |

I do not think this is the crew patch you will see on the Sokol suits of the crew, or on the crew photo.This logo, same style is made for every mission to be on covers, it is probably made by Energia... see here and scroll down the page... |

By the way, Yuri Valentinovich LonchAkov is correct. He will be a Soyuz Commander (Komandir Korablya in Russian) during 2 days flight to ISS and Mike Fincke will be CDR of ISS crew (during Soyuz flight he will be Flight Engineer (Bortinzhener). |

Per my interview yesterday with Richard Garriott: The responsibility for [the TMA-13] patch goes to the crew commander, in this case Yuri Lonchakov. And as you may know, I recently had a crew commander shift and so Yuri has only just become the crew commander of TMA-13.Unfortunately, there is so far no TMA-13 crew patch. I have submitted at least a few ideas and concepts for consideration, as has Mike Fincke -- one of the other crewmates -- has done, but the final patch has so far not been executed. |

So you want a sneak peak at the Soyuz TMA-13 patch? Well sit back, close your eyes and read this. Strike that, reverse it. From my interview today with Soyuz TMA-13 commander Yuri Lonchakov: I will have my patch, TMA-13, and maybe Earth and three people in spacesuit who grab the Earth and this [at the bottom of the patch] will be 'TMA-13'. And this will be 100[th] flight in Soyuz with people. And this [at the top of the patch] will be '100'. And then [the names] Lochakov, Fincke and Garriott. Lonchakov's call sign will be Titan, as symbolized in the patch by the astronauts holding Earth, in the spirit of Atlas. |

Seems there will be a TMA-13 crew patch:  Looks like the patch is shaped like the Soyuz Descent Module and shows the spaceship against a very starry background. Still unclear whether Alex Panchenko is still involved. Now for a higher res picture... |

As noted on the front page of collectSPACE: ...as well as a notation that the TMA-13 flight will mark the 100th manned Soyuz mission. |

Interestingly, Russia's Federal Space Agency has posted an article by Alexander Zheleznyakov on its website (translated by Google) disputing Yuri Lonchakov's account (as quoted above) that this is the 100th Soyuz manned flight. In doing so, Zheleznyakov seemingly criticizes Lonchakov's patch design.To be fair, Zheleznyakov does arrive at a count that would equal 100, but advises: "However, such a calculation is cumbersome and has never been used. I do not recommend it, as its background will take a long time to explain. Moreover, it is not correct." |

To clarify what he is saying, this is the 99th time they will launch with men onboard a Soyuz; Soyuz 34, the 100th some are counting, launched unmanned but returned with people onboard. |

 In addition to the well known '100' crew patch, the Russian space agency Roscosmos designed their own official mission logo for the Soyuz TMA-13 launch. Just a couple of weeks ago, Spacepatches.nl got the request by Roscosmos to slightly modify their design and produce a little over 750 embroidered patches. We partnered up with Luc and Jaap at Spaceview, who have a lot of experience in producing patches for the Russians. Luc made the final adjustments and we managed to get the first batch in Moscow in time for the crew's farewell party.  Late last week, the rest of the patches arrived at Baikonur, where Roscosmos planned to hand them out as a gift to guests attending the launch. Does this mean that Roscosmos didn't like the patch the crew wore? If so, I kind of agree with them, I like their design better. |

I would agree with CDR Lonchakov. Soyuz TMA-13 was the 100th Soyuz.If you look at our Gemini program, they included the 2 unmanned flights, and one of those was a sub-orbital mission. |

Although somewhat involved in the Roscosmos project, I am happy for the crew they were allowed to wear their own design. |

Can someone explain that to me? Is Lonchakov referring to the red patch? His name is in the middle... I'm confused.

He was referring to the diamond-shaped Roscosmos patch described and pictured in Erik's (hoorenz) post above. Roscosmos had their own TMA-13 design, as opposed to the red capsule-shaped patch the Lonchakov designed and the crew wore. |

Look again, the embroidered Roscosmos patch does have names with Fincke's in the middle.I assume the "Garriot" reference is explained by spacepatches.info: an earlier version of the design misspelled Garriott's name, leaving off the second 't'. |

The Garriot(t) patch with one T was never produced, so that is not the reason. The mistake was only in the artwork, but was caught in time. We believe Garriott liked the 100 patch very much (maybe he arranged the embroidered version?) and that is probably why Lonchakov wanted to keep that one on the suits (apart from his name not being in the middle). |
