Why are there different versions of the STS-51C patch?

First of all astronaut Payton was added to the crew at a later date. Therefore the name was added to the original patch.

Please see here or here.

The AB emblem patch (NASA patch contractor) does have an additional tab at the bottom carrying the name Payton.

The official STS-51C patch has a separate tab with PAYTON on it (this was made separately at a later date) and was sewn to the original round patch.

All other patches made by other companies are non-official patches. I have four other (different) 4" versions of the STS-51C patch.

I was wondering, how come AB Emblem makes the STS-51C patch with a small tab with Payton on it? The ones that the STS-51C crew wore has a longer tab on the bottom of the patch. It seems that everything else in the current AB Emblem patch is exact to what the crew wore except for the small Payton tab. Anyone know?

I actually noticed that the STS-51C crew wore two versions of this mission patch. Both patches are exactly the same, however the difference is in the Payton tab at the bottom of the patch. I noticed in the version worn by the crew in the crew photo which I believe was taken in Nov. 1984 the crew wore the patch that had the longer Payton tab at the bottom. Then I saw a few pictures on NASA images of the STS-51C crew during training in Jan. 1985 as well as an individual photo taken of Ellison Onizuka and he and the rest of the crew is wear the STS-51C patch with the small Payton tab at the bottom of the patch. That is the one that is currently sold by AB Emblem. Also during the flight itself I saw pictures of Onizuka wearing the same patch with the small Payton tab on it. So there clearly appears to be two of the same patches one with the longer Payton tab and one with the small tab.

So AB Emblem has it exactly right and sells the one with the small tab that was worn on the flight.

Well I do not have any clear up-close photos of the patch during the flight of STS-51-C just from a distance. I found some on the NASA Images website. If you want to see some more pictures of the current AB Emblem STS-51-C patch then just go to their website or The Space Store or even SpaceFlightNowstore and obviously click on the image. I was really just concerning myself with the Payton tab and discovered that there were those two different sized tabs (therefore two versions worn by the crew) of the patch in different pictures of the crew. I have not yet looked into the coloration or details of the design. Although I love this patch and in my opinion is one of the best of the shuttle patches.

I bet that the patch on the crew photo is a sample patch. The Lion Brothers STS 51-C patch tab is closer to the one in the crew photo but it is a one piece.

Yeah, the patch in the crew photo wasn't a Lion Brothers, I thought it may be also but I looked at the Lion Brothers version and the eagle and the coloration on the wings seems different and the tips of the wings come out too far. I was also thinking it may be a decal like the STS-51-J crew photo but it really looks like a regular embroidered patch. So I guess then they did wear two versions because like I said by Jan. 1985 during the crew training and of course during the flight they wore the patch with the small Payton tab on it.

Coincidently, 24 years ago today, I was at KSC's press site for the shuttle programs first "secret" DOD mission - STS 51C. The lack of PAO comments (until T-9 minutes) made this launch day very unique.

The only version that AB Emblem has ever sold was the patch with the shorter tab. Lion Brothers STS-51-C patch has a slightly longer tab but some of the other details like the wings of the eagle, and the eagles coloration, are not accurate. Besides to my knowledge, the crew wore the AB Emblem versions anyhow.

Also it is kinda cool that we are discussing the STS-51-C patch on the 24th anniversary of the flight.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw the date on the post. STS-51C is my favorite of the DOD flight patchess. It was the first time I had a patch before the flight.
