NASA has designed an emblem for the 40th anniversary of Apollo, which will be highlighted as part of the agency's "First Footprints" commemoration, celebrating Apollo under the theme, "Exploring Space, Discovering Earth".

(There is also a rasterized version of the logo.)

The art is not Apollo 11 specific, marking a departure from the earlier anniversaries.

NASA's decision to go with a non-mission specific logo was influenced by the input of several Apollo astronauts, including Neil Armstrong, who felt that the focus of the celebration should be on the entire program.

Space history enthusiasts have designed emblems that are specific to Apollo 11's 40th anniversary in July 2009.

The logo on the left was created by Colin Mackellar for the anniversary celebrations in Canberra, Australia.

The emblem on the left was designed as a limited edition patch by Jerry Czubinski, Andrew Li and graphic artist Eric Pickett.

Marc Jacobs, who has designed insignias for the astronauts, shares his version of NASA's "Apollo 40 Years" emblem.

I saw the "official" logo for the Apollo 11 40th anniversary. I like the simplicity and use of the Earth-rise. And I understand the desire to not just commemorate the first moon landing, but everyone involved in the entire Apollo program. However, I think that the designer(s) should have included something from Apollo 11. Therefore, I have attached my rough revision.

Congratulations NASA on yet another uninspired logo. I don't know what else to say — maybe hire some graphic artists outside the agency? Boring fonts and a lifeless image - the eagle adds a lot to the overall look. What's with the moon — does it even look right to anyone? What's with the color — brown? Come on!

I want to thank Jerry, Andrew and Eric for making their Apollo 11 40 anniversary patch. It will add nicely to my collection.
