Can anyone shed some light on how common the beta cloth astronaut name tags/panels are? I saw two Skylab names for sale last week, and someone has a Lovell name panel for sale on eBay now. Thanks. |

I have a "W. Schirra" and was curious how these were used also. Most of the photos I see do not include the first name initial on the tag. |

Just picked up red Scott and Worden beta name tags. I assume these were meant for the PLSS? Has anyone ever seen red tags before? |

Dave Scott's beta name tag was indeed red. You can see this in several training photos of him in his suit as well as some of the lunar surface pics. Take a look at the photo of the plaque on the LRV in the other thread. Scott's chestpack is visible in the background, and while a bit blurry, you can see the red lettering.I don't know if the backpack PLSS tag was red too, but Irwin's appear to have been all black. I've also seen red lettering in some photos of Shepard (and on the Moonshot figure from Code 3). I have no idea why the CMP would have red, as it seems other examples seem to have the red only on the CDR, similar to the red stripes on other suit components. |

There is an Aurora Galleries auction catalog with the red name tag on the cover.

Anyone know what kind of font is used on Neil Armstrong's Beta cloth name tag?Or better yet, anyone know where I can get a really good close up photo of the name tag? It's for a school project. Thanks! |

I'd go with GrotesqueMT-Condensed from the Monotype Type Foundry. Try searching the net for a free download font (dependent on your computer platform). If you can add a slight stroke to the font it would help as the ink on the beta name tags always seems to spread a little which makes the font look slightly bolder than it actually is.Hope that helps. |

I've now updated the beta cloth page of my Crew Patches site to add some more details on beta cloth name tags.I identified three distinct name tag styles used during the Apollo project which I've described on the page. I'm sure I've overlooked some things so I'm happy to update the page with more information from fellow collectors. |

The Apollo 14 astronauts had name tags on the flight suits they wore exiting the helicopter on the USS New Orleans after splashdown. |
