Drew Feustel published the Expedition 56 patch on Twitter.
ISS Expedition 56 mission patch

The International Space Station's (ISS) Expedition 56 begins with the scheduled undocking of Soyuz MS-07. New crew members will arrive shortly thereafter on Soyuz MS-09.

ISS Expedition 56 will be led by commander Drew Feustel of NASA. His crewmates, all flight engineers, include: Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Artemyev and Sergei Prokopyev; Ricky Arnold and Jeanette Epps of NASA and European Space Agency astronaut Alexander Gerst.

The Expedition 56 patch portrays a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak. The patch includes of the Soyuz launch vehicle for the crew and the ISS orbital laboratory. The Expedition 56 astronauts' names are displayed on the dove's wings and along the limb of the Earth at the base of the patch.

The dove's tail is firmly planted on the Earth limb in order to represent the strong link between our planet and the humans who are sent into the cosmos to carry us beyond the bounds of our only home. The patch theme is best expressed with the Sanskrit word "Shanti," meaning peace, tranquility in one of the oldest languages in history. The patch illustrates our hope for peace and love in the world, and the innate human desire to spread our wings and explore into the future, building on the wisdom of the past, for the betterment of humankind.

This revised AB Emblem Expedition 56 patch has the patch design number 289528 but I don't know the date code(s) used as yet.

Update; No embedded labels have been found on the first batches of these Expedition 56 patches to leave Weaverville, NC this week ending 9th March 2018.

Still not one of these revised Expedition 56 patches has been found or reported to me with an embedded label on it. I have asked the question why to AB Emblem, but have not yet received an answer. (As of 27th March 2018).
Never did receive an answer.

Finally the Expedition 56 patches with (Serena Aunon-Chancellor) are now starting to come through with the new style 'crown emblem' embedded labels on them. The previous one or maybe two production runs had no labels attached to the backs, or on their cellophane packets.
These are the date codes seen so far;
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 12/13 20 (USA) Date Code Error should be 12/17 20 (Crew Batch)? Found at Baikonur, seen photo.
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 1/18/20 (USA) (Crew batch)? Also found at Baikonur, seen photo.
  • 239528 A-B Emblem 03/18 20 (USA) (Patch design number error, 3 instead of 8, second numeral).
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 03/18 20 (USA)
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 3/18/20 (USA)
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 03/1840 (China)
  • 289528 A-B Emblem 4/18 20 (USA)
  • 289258 A-B Emblem 4/18 20 (USA) SKU error fourth and fifth numerals "25" instead of "52"

  • 293879 A-B Emblem 6/18 20 (USA) New SKU patch design number #
  • 293879 A-B Emblem Made In China 07/1840 #
  • 293879 A-B Emblem Made In China 09/18 01 #

  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 12/1840
  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 02/1940
  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 04/21 40

Updated on 09-09-19; A sixth date code has come to light, but it is a date code error. 12/13 20 (December 2013 USA) on a new style 'crown emblem' label. See top of list above.

The latest production run made in USA and China for the Expedition 56 patches has a new SKU "patch design" number #.
  • 293879 A-B Emblem 6/18 20 (USA) #
  • 293879 A-B Emblem Made In China 07/1840 #
  • 286236 A-B Emblem Made In China 08/18 01 (Epps production run Error)
  • 293879 A-B Emblem Made In China 09/18 01 #

  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 12/1940
  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 02/1940
  • 289528 A-B Emblem Made In China 04/21 40 (newest known d/c.)
The previous one was 289528. This new patch design number looks to be a deliberate new number. But looking at the patches there are no visible differences to the patch design its self.

Another date code has been found, this one ends in "01". Another error? As "01" was the previous end number for "Made In China" before it changed back to "40" again in late 2017.
The date codes ending in "01" were only used for about 65% of production runs in August 2018 and a few runs in early September 2018.

During Russian EVA-45 on Wednesday (Aug. 15), Oleg Artemyev had the first version of Expedition 56 patch, did Sergey Prokopyev have the same?

It looks to me like Prokopyev wore the new version of the patch.

Both Expedition 56 patches worn by Artemyev and Prokopyev can be seen in the same shot in this photo taken by Alexander Gerst.

It is looking like a major production error was made during August 2018 at AB Emblem's China factory involving the ISS Expedition 56 patches.

Somehow a possible full production run of maybe 500+ patches of the now obsolete "Epps" version of this Expedition 56 patch was produced. They all have the correct patch design number for the Epps patches, 286236 but on the new style embedded labels with the crown emblem and A-B Emblem plus Made In China, with the date code 08/18 01. ("01" has been revived as the country of manufacture code for China again, instead of "40").

The previous and following production runs were all correct with Aunon-Chancellor, 293879 patch design number, and date codes 07/1840 (see my last post above) and 09/18 01 on their embedded labels. (See bottom two patches in scan below).

How and why this mistake/error was made and remained undetected until yesterday, I have no idea? But the error continued to Weaverville when these Expedition 56 "Epps" patches were listed on AB Emblem's website on their "Lost In Space... And Found" page on Monday 17th December. These patches remained on sale until yesterday afternoon when they were removed, and the caption "Sold Out" was reinserted.

I don't think all of these "Epps" patches sold out in just 13 days, and I have no idea as to how many were actually sold in that time?

The original Expedition 56 "Epps" production run was made at Weaverville in November 2017. Probably only about 50+ patches were produced?

  • 286236 Made In USA 11/1720 (Top two patches below)
The two center patches are the production error ones.

What do you base the "500+" estimate on?

I understand this to be the number for a normal interim production run for the more popular or current patches Liem.

I had such a patch, without stickers/label. Is there an explanation for this in the meantime?

I can only put it down to a lack of proper management (no one person in overall charge), and poor or mixed quality control?
