Anyone know the number produced of the 2006 Stennis Space Center issued 40th anniversary commemorative pin with metal from original F-1 and J-2 engine tests? |

I don't have a source for this, but I remember hearing that enough were produced to be distributed to all employees at Stennis Space Center. If that was only referring to NASA civil servants, then that would be about 400 pins. If that count also included NASA contractor employees, then it would be about 1,800 pins in total. And it could be even more than that, if also including other agencies' employees and contractors who are stationed at Stennis. For the benefit of those not familiar and for reference, the card included reads: Stennis Space Center conducted its first rocket engine test on April 23, 1966. The test was a cluster of five J-2 engines that powered the second stage (S-II) of the Apollo Program's Saturn V moon rocket. The S-II's five J-2 engines produced 1 million pounds of thrust. The powerful F-1 engines used in the first stage of the Saturn V vehicle were also tested at Stennis Space Center. Each F-1 was 19 feet tall and produced a 1.5 million-pound thrust. Each engine weighted 10 tons. This commemorative pin contains metal shavings from original J-2 and F-1 engines tested at Stennis Space Center. |
