Can anyone point me in the direction of a detailed description of the STS-51C crew insignia design - it's quite a detailed patch but I have been unable to discover what all its features actually mean.

Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

STS 51C was the first Department of Defense Dedicated Mission. I do believe that the eagle is a representation of the DOD, and the red, white, and blue trail following the shuttle represents the United States of America. Beyond that, it was difficult to find any information at all.

This one is a good question for all you collectSPACE'rs..

Also, if you look at the shuttle itself, only the underside is portrayed... another indication of the "secret" DOD payload it was carrying.

It is very similar to Ken Mattingly's previous shuttle patch (STS-4) which carried a partial DOD payload.

The Eagle, shield, arrows, inner border with stars all come from the DoD emblem. The five stars represent each service branch: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. The Navy Blue background and gold colors are Navy colors. The CDR Ken Mattingly was Navy.

The orbiter is shown with its payload bay hidden from the viewer to illustrate that this was a top secret DoD payload.

Hope this is what you're looking for.
