STS-131 mission patchSTS-131 will deliver research and science experiment equipment, including the window observational research facility (WORF) and the muscle atrophy research and exercise (MARE) system rack, new crew quarters and supplies to the International Space Station aboard the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM) Leonardo carried in the shuttle's payload bay. Alan "Dex" Pointdexter will command the mission, which is targeted to launch on the penultimate flight of Discovery in March 2010. James "Mash" Dutton will serve as pilot. The STS-131 mission specialists are Rick Mastracchio, Clay Anderson, Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger, Stephanie Wilson and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Naoko Yamazaki.  |

Wow, anther striking and powerful design! And almost no red in a shuttle patch... an exception! Makes for a unique 'feel' to this one. |

Just when you think how can some of the earlier patch designs be improved on!
Excellent design. Any ideas at this early stage of the artists/designers involved? |

I normally don't like patches but this one ... it's great! Now, if I could only put my hands on a complimentary Robbins medallion.

Nice patch. Only problem is the STS-133 design I sent in to Tim shares a lot of similar elements... so bad news for my chances.  |

Very good design. Interesting that the 131 patch came out before the 130 patch. Can't wait to see that one as well. |

It's about time for another round shuttle patch, especially one done this well. I love the two-tone blues-very vibrant together. |

Another winner! If the yellow elements in the artwork are in fact going to be embroidered in gold, this could be one of the most striking patches in the history of the program...It kind of recalls the simpler, more elegant designs of the early years. |

NASA has now released the insignia and its official description: The STS-131/19A crew patch highlights the space shuttle in the Rendezvous Pitch Maneuver (RPM). This maneuver is heavily photographed by the International Space Station (ISS) astronauts, and the photos are analyzed back on earth to clear the space shuttle's thermal protection system for re-entry. The RPM illustrates the teamwork and safety process behind each Space Shuttle launch. In the space shuttle's cargo bay is the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (MPLM), Leonardo, which is carrying several science racks, the last of the four crew quarters, and supplies for the ISS. Out of view and directly behind the MPLM, is the Ammonia Tank Assembly (ATA) that will be used to replace the current ATA. This will take place during three Extra Vehicular Activities (EVAs). The 51.6° space shuttle orbit is illustrated by the three gold bars of the astronaut symbol, and its elliptical wreath contains the orbit of the ISS. The star atop the astronaut symbol is the dawning sun, which is spreading its early light across the Earth. The background star field contains seven stars, one for each crewmember; they are proud to represent the United States and Japan during this mission. |

Could it be coincidence that the two-tone blue in the patch for Discovery's last flight honors the first flight of Discovery with a two-tone blue patch? Maybe not the same blues, but still blue. Blue and round. Might be that I'm partial to the 41D patch. Just a thought. |

STS-131 is Discovery's penultimate, or second to last flight. Discovery's last flight will be STS-133, the last mission of the space shuttle program. |

Just realized Discovery's last flight is STS-133 moments after posting. I knew it, but forgot. Got ahead of myself on that thread. Thanks Robert for putting it straight. Sort of blows that idea out of the water I guess. To think of it STS-128 two-tones come closer to 41D colors than 131. |

The STS-131 crew was recently photographed wearing their patch (and in the case of Naoko Yamazaki, at right, her JAXA mission patch as well). |

Am I just ignorant, or does WORF mean what I think it means since the symbols look like Klingon? Am I dreaming or is this true? When are they bringing up the transporter? |

From NASA: The Window Observational Research Facility (WORF) provides a facility for Earth science remote sensing instruments using the Destiny science window with the highest quality optics ever flown on a human-occupied spacecraft. (But yes, that is Klingon on the payload insignia, in recognition of its acronym's shared connection to a certain Lt. Commander.) |

I have noticed during STS-131 training that the crew were wearing a really nicely done cap which was embroidered with features from their patch. Does anyone know if you can get this cap or is it strictly made for the crew? I love these really cool caps. |

That cap may have been made by Space Shirts on Merritt Island. I know they have done similar items before for shuttle crew members. They call the versions of crew emblems you mention "simplified." I bought such a cap for STS-127 (and a 131 polo) from them while down there this past week for the launch. They are quite willing to do all sorts of great custom work for you and I highly recommend them. |
