I received this brass belt buckle from a garage sale in Pasadena, Ca. from a woman probably in her 80's. She said "it was her late husbands, he got it at his job when he worked at Ames Research in the 70's,and wore it quite a bit. Then he got a job at J.P.L. and stopped wearing it". Well I figure this buckle was given to people who worked on one of the Pioneer projects. But did everyone get one, or just the managers, or who? It looks exactly like the Pioneer Plaque designed by Sagan and Lomberg only 2x3 inches and in solid brass, with brass fittings at the rear to hold it onto a belt of some sort. The quality of the thing would not denote a souvenir item. The nib at the back of the buckle is not any that I have ever seen, instead of a clawlike nib that would hook into a belt for fastening, this buckle has a small ball, atop a small neck that appears to have to be pushed into a small hole in the belt for securing. Anybody know anything about this buckle? I'd be glad to send you pics if needed. | |
