LEGO launching NASA/ESA Ulysses solar probe as VIP reward set

LEGO has a new mission for its recently-released space shuttle Discovery and you can get it for free — if you are a VIP.

The toy company is set to launch a brick-built model of NASA and the European Space Agency's (ESA) Ulysses solar probe on Wednesday (April 14), available to members of its customer loyalty program.

How appropriate, the next flight after STS-31 with the Hubble Space Telescope was STS-41 with Ulysses.

Same here (in the Eastern time zone, US). Kept refreshing, refreshing... but no luck. My son did get one, however. He told me he kept the "Rewards" page open (not the VIP home like I did) and hit refresh from there. I told him to hang on it once it arrives, it might be worth something down the road.

It took a lot of refreshing both the rewards center and the VIP intro pages, and I almost gave up, but I was finally able to get through and add the Ulysses probe to my cart. Then my order failed — or I thought it did.

I just received a confirmation email, so fingers crossed, a kit will soon be on its way here.

For those, like me, that missed out, a member of the Rebrickable community has created instructions for a fan version. I'm hoping this kicks off a series of 1:70-scale LEGO payloads for the shuttle.

I found that I could not place the order using PayPal. When I hit the Place Order button, I'd get the spinner for a second and then no change to the page, and no error message. Tried this multiple times.

I ended up having to use a credit card, and after the page changed to the order confirmation, I got the "something went wrong" page. But, like Robert, I got the email as well a while later, and the order shows up in the recent orders page.

After the problems to acquire this VIP set I decided to have a look at it and design my own Ulysses/IUS model.

Here is a short description of my LEGO MOC's (My Own Creations) NASA/ESA Ulysses solar probe/IUS combination.

What's your opinion?

LEGO is releasing another limited number of its Ulysses solar probe sets on Tuesday (May 17). The kit will be available to VIP members for 1800 points beginning at 9 a.m. EDT (1400 GMT).

Only one promotional code can be applied per order. Subject to availability and only while supplies last.

All times are CT (US)
