Bandai is re-releasing its 1:144 Otona no Chogokin Apollo 11 and Saturn V model as Apollo 13 and Saturn V for August.

This time there is a splashdown display complete with ocean base, SH-3, diver etc.

I'll be getting a second one.

Anticipating a question, Bandai's suggested retail price is 54,600 yen ($580).

Does this model include two service modules, one "damaged" and the other not?

Two service modules, here is a page that displays the full product.

There are three service modules (one showing the damaged section) and three command modules (one for splashdown diorama).

We finally have our Bandai Apollo 13 Saturn V displayed. Great details in the engine mounts which get covered up in a vertical display. As with the Apollo 11, it came with supports for a horizontal display.

The splashdown/recovery diorama is very cool and is done well for the scale. I like the damage SM display and is good detail for the scale.

The only downside is the that the CSM/LES stack appears to be too long. The LES does not fully cover the CM, but I think the CM could be removed and the LES attached directly to the SM and then use the CM with the spare SM. That would help but the overall SM looks to be too long in of itself.

All in all a good purchase at the retail price (shipping was high at $107 but it did arrive in three days). I would not buy it for the after market price the Apollo 11 went for ($1000 plus).

Thank you for posting photos of your outstanding display!

You are correct that the scale is off for the service module.

I've had a chance to look at mine a little more closely now. To me, something that stands out from the previous release is that the S-II/ S-IVB interstage fairing is a much brighter white than the rest of the booster. At first it was pretty distracting, but I'm getting over it now. Have any skilled modellers out there considered "correcting" one of the SMs?

Has anyone compared the Apollo 11 version of the Saturn V to the Apollo 13 version? Are the Saturn Vs identical?

I haven't done a detailed "panel by panel" comparison but they're certainly not identical as each has it's correct serial number on the S-IC stage. You need to look pretty closely to see the difference between a six and an eight. My Apollo 13 release is not quite as good as my Apollo 11 as the S-II/ S-IVB interstage is a slightly whiter non-matching shade than the rest of the booster.

My Apollo 13 set looks fine. All the stages and interstages color match. I wonder if some of the sets were combined after separate paint runs?

Almost tempted to buy another at that price. I wonder what they'll be going for on eBay this time next year?

Is Bandai going to correct the too small SLA/service module section on this model? The Saturn V rocket is fine but the wrong shaped SLA/service module kills the whole model.

This model has been out of production for about four years. There is no indication as of today that Bandai plans to reissue it (again).

Hopefully one day it will be offered again. How can they get everything right except the SLA/service module section, really?

You're right, it's the one flaw (and a fairly glaring one) in an otherwise just about flawless model.

Is there a way of using the corrected Airfix SLA, CSM or the RealSpace resin replacement?

Well actually the flaw with the SM is that it is too elongated.

Yes it is a disappointment for such a nice model, but I let it go shortly after I purchased mine. The rest of the model let's me do that. They are so nice in my opinion. To me the flaw is only noticeable when I'm reminded of it.

My Apollo 11 version is separated in sections displayed lying down just like at the Saturn V Centre in Florida. It looks great and along with the Bandai Shuttle are the centre pieces of my space model display.

I would guess you could use the corrected Airfix SLA/service module, and I guess you'd have to use the Airfix command module too, at least it would then look right.

I've been meaning to bring this up for quite sometime. The helicopter for the Apollo 13 version shows USS Hornet markings but the pickup was done by the USS Iwo Jima.

Maybe I just missed it, but in all the reviews I've seen of this model, nobody ever mentioned this mistake (which surprises me). This is something that would have been easy fix on Bandai's end.
