With the release of the new Gallery Models 1/350 USS Intrepid carrier plastic kit imminent, I am wondering about the possibility of converting it to one of the other angle deck Essex class recovery carriers used to recover Apollo spacecraft.

Not having much knowledge of naval ships, it would be nice to know if it is one of those projects that could be undertaken with some reasonable effort or whether the basic structures are so significantly different to be impractical.

I would be particularly grateful if anyone could point me in the direction of a reference (book or internet) that illustrates the angle deck Essex carrier variants.

I can't figure out if it's an already assembled model or not, at 30" and $330! I'm assuming that it's not since it mentions 1,000 parts. But a more recent carrier (Forrestal or later) already built (some exist but at a scale of 1:700) would be excessively tempting.
