I am considering building a copy of the 1/6 rover model built by Ferenc Pavlic during the competition for the Apollo lunar roving vehicle contract.

It appears he used balsa wood for most of the structure. Other items like the suspension I could easily recreate on a 3D printer. The wire wheels might be a bit of work but I think I see how he did them.

Has anyone else ever tried this? If so I would love to see pictures. Here's some photos of the original via RocketSTEM and David Clow:

I met him, great guy, showed me the rover and the box and release mechanisms. Gave me a set of blueprints for the wheels and explained how they were hand built.

Ferenc's model and the LRV wheel are mighty artifacts.

Any chance you could share any of that information or did he ask you not to?

You can order these wheels on Shapeways, I did use them once for a 1:6 LRV.
