Dragon Wings has announced a 4D cutaway line of products known as Project Cutaway. Here's the link with images of a Boeing 747.

Will Dragon include space models?

I just hope the scale will not be 1/72.

The cutaway model is the same the original model DM-50375 and the scale is 1:72.

Although since there's a 1/48 Apollo 11 Lunar Module "Eagle" plastic kit, maybe there's one in the making. Who knows.

In my opinion, the 1/72 scale would be too small to do justice to the cutaway Apollo spacecraft. The bigger the better I say and 1/48 would certainly be an improvement.

Another thread on this forum talks about the 1:24th scale lunar lander and the Apollo CSM that will soon be out. I agree a 1:72 scale would be far to small for the 4D vision to be effective or worthwhile.

Could they have done a more see-through orbiter? The model shown however looks like a work-in-progress one.

The first two models (both 747) are planned for November (Braniff) and December (Air Force One) respectively, with a price difference of $40 between the two. (?)

Based on pictures from the Flying Mule web site, the 747 comes as a snap kit! I wonder how the space models will look like.

It looks to me like it is ready made. Looks like there is some assembly, attach the wings, etc. No worse than their shuttle stacks I would imagine.

And is documented as a ready made model:

The Dragon Models "Project: Cutaway" range presents highly-detailed, ready-made plastic models in varying scales. These educational replicas don't just show you what you can see on the outside, but they also take you inside! Represented in true to scale accuracy and a high level of detail, it's as close to walking inside the real thing as you can get!

Dragon Models "Project: Cutaway" display models feature:

  • Molded plastic construction.
  • Cut-away or transparent sections to show interior details.
  • Detailed cockpit interiors and structural features.
  • Realistic panel lines, antennas, access panels and surface details.
  • Pad printed markings and placards that won't fade or peel like decals.
  • No painting or glueing required.

Looking at Dragon's website tonight, it appears there is a 1/144 orbiter on the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, also there is a 1/144th orbiter with ET and SRBs.

From the image of the orbiter and stack, it looks like the orbiter is much more see though then the previous pictures we saw of the orbiter on the SCA.

Dragon today updated its promo image for its 1/144 Space Shuttle Discovery with Boeing 747 SCA (No. 47405), part of its Project Cutaway line of models.

I know it's just pre-production artwork, but I'm concerned that the 747SCA is being shown as a light shade of blue.

Dragon erred with their last 1/400 SCA and Discovery model by painting the SCA that very same shade of blue that is shown in this image.
Hopefully that gets corrected.

Actually, Dragon is correct. The current NASA white has a slight blue tint. This was clearly visible during the ferry flight, with the SCA having a distinct blue tint, especially in shadowed areas, compared to Discovery's white.

Here's a 2005 picture (Credit: Lori Losey/NASA/Getty Images), it's blue-ish back then.

Regarding the SCA paint color... It's obvious in recent years that whatever color formula NASA used for the current SCA upper-fuselage paint has a distinct blue tint, at least in what appears to be most daytime lighting conditions. That's why the coloration of the recent Dragon Discovery/SCA model, though interesting in contrast with their earlier Endeavour/SCA release, doesn't bother me.

As for the upcoming cutaway model... paint job aside, it seems to me not "cut away" enough. I realize that most ferried orbiters were empty of visually interesting payloads, and the interiors of the SCAs were basically stripped clean to save weight, but I'd like to see more interior detail than what this looks to show. At least the SCA cockpit and maybe the forward interior section?

But, yeah, I'll buy it regardless. It'll look nice next to my Bandai Endeavour in the same scale.

I don't know if it's an error or something that will be announced but Dragon has included a scale 1:48 in their line of products, although it doesn't correspond to any specific product (only 1:72 and 1:144 products have been announced).

Too bad they didn't cutaway an SRB and the ET. The fairly simple components inside these could have been made visible with little effort. This would add a lot to the model.

To put my Photoshop where my mouth is ....

Cutaway Stack 400px

Note this is a mockup and does not represent the actual kit being offered.

Who knows...

Only two models have been produced (or reached retailers) so far, both 747 at 1:144 scale, announced in November and December 2011, available for $91 and $128 (check the Flying Mule web site).

Four more models have been announced since late 2011 but availability and pricing is anyone's guess.
