I thought that it would be fun to have some discussion about what the collectSPACE community would like to see released by way of space model kits and diecasts in the future.

I would love to see a Vehicle Assembly Building and Launch Complex 39 model in any scale.

I'd really love to get a diecast Skylab. 1:72 would probably be the largest scale that could find a market, and even that's probably too much to hope for. I'd settle for a decent 1:144.

I would love to see a lunar rover with base and astronaut — sort of a panorama in at least 1/24 scale. 1/18 would be great!

- Continuation of Dragon's rocket lineup (I hate incomplete sets) like Proton, Atlas versions, early Ariane. And a N-1.

Atlas/Titan at 1:72 would almost be must-have's.

  • A really decent Bandai's style Hubble Space Telescope.
  • ibid for Skylab.
  • ibid for a lunar rover.
  • ibid for Voyager.
...or anything that would fall into the "Whoooah! Super cool! This is f****** neat. I want one" as opposed to the "oh. Another version of that model."

But I'll trade those above for never-before-seen post-WWII jet-powered bombers! (still waiting for that Dragon's B-58...)

And of course I don't have room (and probably not the budget) to display them anyway.

I actually would love to see Skylab in a 1/48 scale model and mostly made out of metal. Plastic just breaks to easily.

More kits from Dragon... and of Dragon!! The Apollo 12 mission as a kit. Mercury Atlas and Titan kits. And maybe a Soyuz TMA in 1/72 or 1/48 scale.

That would be HUGE. But we do have a CSM to go with it. Again, the problem is in the solar panels being too heavy or out of scale.

I would like to see The Franklin Mint re-issue the LM. I would like to see a quality die cast Mars rovers kit, all three of the latest rovers together. Love to see Dragon do the full crawlers for the Saturn and shuttle. Waiting for a Diecast 1:72 NASA T-38.

And looks and feels cheap. That's why I prefer real diecast aircraft models.

Some of the rocket nominations in 1/72 have been done as paper models and/or flying model rockets (I'm about halfway done with a 1/70 SEMROC Saturn 1B). So there are alternatives out there. A 1/72 N-1 would be a bit big and unwieldy though as a plastic kit or a pre-build with that open truss structure between the stages (and its wide base as I doubt it would fit in an Ikea Detloff case).

What I would like to see (primarily from Dragon) is the following:

  • 1/72 Mercury capsule kit (come on, I'm not paying over 30 bucks for a tiny pre-build, at least give us the heat shield piece in the Mercury Redstone kit if you won't do this).

  • 1/72 Mercury Atlas
  • 1/72 Gemini Titan (the current Gemini builds better as a launch configuration one than an on orbit capsule)
  • 1/72 Saturn V (as a KIT please! You've designed it that way, give it to us!)
  • 1/72 Saturn 1B (could be done)
  • 1/72 Skylab (this is about the upper limit for size of a Skylab model with sturdy enough soloar arrays)
  • 1/72 Universal Apollo CSM/LM combo kit (give us ALL of it, Surveyor, SIM Bay, J LM stuff, Rover etc. so we don't have to buy four or five different kits to get everything).
  • 1/72 Salyut Soyuz (design it right for Gen 1 and 2 DOS Salyuts as opposed to Almaz, it could be a good thing).

  • 1/48 Long March Shenzhou CZ-2F (reissue as Shanghai Dragon did this kit in 1999).

  • 1/72 and/or 1/48 Soyuz T/TM/TMA series.
And if ANY company does a new shuttle tooling either as a kit or a diecast and they are representing it as a late shuttle, please please PLEASE tool up an option to incorporate the dragchute housing on the base of the tail. To date, ONLY Bandai has done the dragchute tail on their 1/144 Shuttle pre-build. Even on the images I saw from Dragon of their cutaway shuttle and 747 model, they were still putting a NASA meatball paintjob on a shuttle with no dragchute on the tail.

Of course, I'm not holding out all that much hope that any of these subjects on my wish list will ever get released as Dragon seems to have slowed their kit production, possibly because they flooded the market too fast with too much product (and a few of the items with research errors in them).

I second Jay's nominations (all good ones), and add a 1:72 Shenzhou.

Probably and also because they came out with different versions of the same models (Titan and Deltas). But their Dragon Wings Warbird and Dragon Wings (commercial) production has also slowed down considerably, contrary to their WWII products and Marvel/Disney ones.

Actually, the Shenzhou has been done as a kit in 1/48 by Great Wall with the Tiangong 1 station kit. I know its not a pre-build, but it is something at least.

Trumpeter also did a 1/72 Shenzhou about 10 years ago, but it is more a desktop model than something based on flight hardware it seems (they can be found for relatively cheap prices on the secondary market). Given that we haven't seen many images of the craft by itself, its hard to pin down a lot of the features on it.

I've been doing CAD models for new model kits for one of the kit manufacturers, not Revell or Tamiya but they produce very high quality injection molded kits, mostly sci-fi and WW2.0.

I work directly with the owner and I've learned a lot of useful infomation about how kits are done in China. The costs are lower than I thought, I imagined anything with steel I.M. tooling would start around $50k regardless of size but actually some small things could be made under $10k which would compete with resin/RTV production.

He likes the idea of a 1/72nd X-15A-3 and even a 1/18th X-15 as a finished model like the ones built by BBI and 21st Century. They already make a few vehicles in that scale.

I talked to him about a 1/32 LM model and he thinks it's a doable project and right now real space is doing fairly well even tho' Dragon is saturating the market. The only problem is the cost of that mold and production could be fairly expensive and the intial capital outlay is still pretty big.

I told him about Kickstarter.com and he thinks that actually could be a good way to finance the kit, tho' in his opinion the X-15 in 1/18th would probably be a better seller.

One project I am doing in realspace is the X-33 with it's launch mount in 1/72nd scale. It's due out sometime this year.

I'd like a 1/96 scale Skylab workshop model in launch configuration that would fit the Revell Saturn V rocket. It could also be set up as an on orbit model.

Also, the rest of the Saturn family of rockets in 1/96 scale. Hard to find the Saturn I in any large scale.

I would love to see a die cast metal space capsule collection in a 1:72 scale with the quality you saw on the Franklin Mint Lunar lander model. As well I would love to see the lunar lander die cast metal as well. The plastic models made by Dragon are nice but still toy like. More over, in die cast metal aviation space collections, 1:72 is the standard for most collectors.
