Picked this kit up from my local hobby importer yesterday. It is the usual Amodel fare with a fibreglass pre-assembled main airframe and injection molded detail parts.

The basic moulding as I said is a fibreglass shell that has some fairly large seams that so far appear to be sanding down reasonably easily. There is no option in the box for open payload doors, but the moulding is fairly thin and well done, so cutting them open and scratch building a payload bay may be an option.

So far examination of the detail parts seem to show them matching my reference pictures quite well where needed. The main fuselage does show traces of the previous use of the mold to create the Buran Analogue kit as the depressions for the upper jet engines, the mountings for the side engines and the fairing location for the extended nose gear are visible in "ghost" outline.

It is interesting that this kit has finally appeared some five years after it was first listed as "coming soon" on internet sites.

Please ask if any more info is required and yes, I am getting the Energya/Buran full stack when it finally becomes available!

In my case, I'll likely order the full stack Buran as well. Expensive yes, but it makes a perfect compliment to the Monogram 1/72 shuttle stacks I've built.

I receive this day the 1/72 Buran and Energia model kit, huge box!!

Size box 90 cm high, wide 37 cm, depth 14 cm, weight 8 pounds.

The stacks and ET are already glue together , minus point cheap dirt plastic and on some place very thin. I have see not the surface after a primer layer, than I can see more.

Anyway a huge lot of parts for a lot of time to build.

To quote George Takei... "Oh MY!"

I am really LIKING the looks of this. I'm going to see if I can get one of these at the IPMS USA Nationals next month. But if I can't, I've already got a line on a Ukraine based vendor I can use. When built, this is going to look MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE, especially next to a Monogram shuttle stack.

Mine should be with me in a couple of weeks Jay, love to see what you do with this one! As I understand it is bigger than the US shuttle stack as well.

Am I reading the price for this model correctly... $468 from HobbyTerra? Is this US dollars or Ukrainian?

Here some photos of the progress Amodel 1:72 Energia with Buran shuttle model kit.

To be honest the plastic quality is not too good. It cost me a lot of sanding work and sure three layers primer with sanding between it, you need these layers for a good paint layer otherwise I come sure off. The thickest of the plastic is quite thin (shuttle thinner than ET and stacks) as a bottle of Coke, I poked a hole in there twice.

For sure I have fill all the major parts with polyurethane foam, I can lift now, it can not be squeezed with the known risk factors for the paintwork.

For the rest it's a beautiful model and it is huge with much parts, but you need a lot of paint primer.

Progress is now on 50%. First dry fit [photo gallery]:

I finally managed to pick one of these up this month. Good grief, this model is HUGE! I am very tempted to start digging into it right away, but there is at least one other space related model project I want to do first (a Dream Chaser on top of an Atlas V in 1/72) and it will take a bit of planning to display this beastie since it is a little bit taller than a US shuttle stack in 1/72. Still, I am very impressed by what I see in the box.

Jay, where were you able to purchase from?

I may need to get another Detolf case. (or would it even fit?)

I got it from hobbyterra.com. I thought they were based out of Germany, but it turns out they are a Ukraine based company. Service was first rate and shipping was fast.

When I saw the package arrive with a Ukraine postmark, I was a bit surprised given the protests in Kiev (which have gotten worse of late). So I can't necessarily guarantee that your package would arrive in a similar timely fashion. But, I didn't have any trouble at least. This isn't the first time I've ordered from Ukrainian based suppliers and in all cases, the packages have arrived in VERY quick fashion and in great shape.

As for the stack fitting in a Detolf case, I don't think it would. The shuttle stacks are pretty wide at the base and the vertical tail also provides its own challenges to trying to fit one in a skinny case. You are at least lucky to even HAVE one of those cases though as I was too slow to order one for my Dragon Saturn V kit (still unbuilt) and now they are discontinued.

As noted here, Ikea did not discontinue the Detolf case; it only has had its packaging and sku changed.

Ahhh, so they are. Now I just have to see about gathering the funds to get one.

And in other news, it looks like Ukraine has stabilized. So hopefully anyone else wanting to get the Amodel Burans from Hobbyterra should have no trouble doing so.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and weight of the Detolf... you won't be disappointed.
