Met someone at the local Maker Faire recently with a display of his 3D printed Orion Crew and Service Module and ICPS stack. He offers them as a wirestand "flying" kit and has an optional print-at-home kit for a vertical stacked display. The kits are available as 1/48 or 1/72 scale right now, but can be offered in other sizes, with sufficient interest. These separate easily into several major components for demonstrations or can be left as display models. These looked okay to me, but he was definitely interested in suggestions to improve the kit, or what other 3D print and assemble kits that modelers would be interested in building. You can check out the kits at his site. |

From a quick glance, they look pretty good. Some concerns and/or suggestions: These look to be printed using the filament extrusion process. It is likely at a serious modeler would not be satisfied with the outcome. Using the SLS system (such as Shapeways uses) would result in much more smooth, professional parts, and could be turned into a professional-looking model. Also, I would would recommend using a constant scale that is somewhat standard. For these, I think 1/48 scale would be the way to go. My two cents... | |
